From the avalanche of headlines, AI-generated videos and nonstop ads, it already feels impossible to sort truth from fiction in today’s political rhetoric. And the closer we get to November’s midterm elections, the harder it’s going to be.

But when it comes to Congress and the U.S. Senate in particular, there’s an easy yardstick for measuring which candidates support the IBEW and working families and which don’t.

This election year, it boils down to two vital pieces of pro-worker legislation: the Faster Labor Contracts Act, passed by the House and awaiting action in the Senate, and the Protecting the Right to Organize Act, or PRO Act.

In a nutshell, the FLCA, introduced by Local 351 member Rep. Donald Norcross, sets a 90-day clock for negotiating a first contract, with mandatory mediation for employers that don’t comply. The PRO Act targets the many ways management illegally interferes with organizing drives and union elections and bans state right-to-work laws.

With one-third of the Senate on the ballot in November, along with the entire House, we have the power — and I’d argue the duty — to elect leaders who will pass these bills.

Has your senator or member of Congress signed on to the PRO Act and FLCA? Have candidates running for those seats pledged to back them?

If the answer is no or you’ve got a lawmaker on the fence, call their office. Tell them your vote depends on their support for the bills.

It’s this easy: Call the U.S. Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and give them the name of your senator or representative. If you get the office voicemail, leave a message. Staff listens to them and takes notes.

Even better, if you have the chance, pose the question at a town hall. Naturally, every politician will claim to support workers and working families. But it’s all lip service if they’re not championing the PRO Act and FLCA.
