Union members keep park visitors safe by refurbishing Horicon Marsh in Mayville, Wis. June 13. |
Horicon Marsh is home to migratory and endangered bird species, and offers captivating views, hiking trails, fishing, hunting and educational classes in wildlife and photography that attract visitors from all over Wisconsin.
Thanks to the hard work of members from Madison Local 159, Milwaukee Local 494 and other unions, visitors can remain safe while appreciating the beauty of the wildlife refuge.
Union volunteers donated their time and skills to construct a roof on a picnic pavilion and refurbish weathered bridge decking on the park’s Egret Nature Trail, a popular hiking and biking spot, in June. They installed tresses and shingles for the roof and repaired and replaced portions of the bridge all in one day, as part of a Union Sportsmen's Alliance project.
“It’s nice to get out in the community and do something for the marsh out there that people can use and enjoy,” said Dave Branson, executive director of the South Central Wisconsin Building and Construction Trade Council, who led the volunteer team.
The Union Sportsmen's Alliance coordinated the project with members of their Work Boots on the Ground program, which brings together union members all over the country to volunteer for the conservation of national parks.
“It’s fantastic that this group was able to donate the time to help enhance the facilities for our visitors,” said Erin Railsback, visitor services manager at Horicon Marsh. “Because of their volunteerism and commitment to conservation and education, thousands of visitors will be able to take advantage of the shelter and continue to enjoy access to the marsh.”
