flat for workers Hourly wages over the last year rose 2.3 percent, short of the 3.0 percent inflation rate. [Bureau of Labor Statistics, 7/04] Ten million workers are at the federal minimum wage rate of $5.15 an hour. Almost one quarter of all workers earn less than $9 an hour, which is the federal poverty line for a family of four.
