Small-Group Workshop Session
October/November 2001 IBEW Journal
Following the general session, Education Department Director
Marty Letsinger and International Representative Glenda Thomason
conducted a dynamic session featuring structured small-group
discussions. Group facilitators led participants in discussions
about their experiences as women in the IBEW in earlier years,
how things have since changed, and their vision for the future
in the union.
"We want to look at where we were, where we are now
and where we go from here," Letsinger said. Group facilitators
and speakers included International Representatives Susie
Barber, Carol Fitzgerald, Mary Harrigan, Donna Myron, Marie
Peluso, Martha Pultar and Christine Pynaker.
Conference organizer Royetta Sanford, IBEW Human Services
Department director, asked women in each group to tell what
prompted them to get involved in the union. Participants were
asked to describe:
The role women played in their local union at the time
they first got involved in the union, and how issues important
to women were addressed then.
Any barriers or obstacles women subsequently faced in getting
their concerns addressed in their local.
The positive changes that have taken place in their local,
the role women now play and the issues important to them.
