Remarks By IBEW Ninth District IVP Dave Reaves

It is an honor to join you today to celebrate the 85th Anniversary of IBEW Local Union 1186. I am fortunate to have my wife Tricia, of 30 years, here with me to celebrate this momentous occasion with all of you and your local.

Before I begin, I’d like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Mayor Kimo Alameda and the elected officials who have joined us here today. Your presence underscores the strong partnership between Local 1186 and the Hawaiʻi County community. We’re honored by your support and grateful for your leadership across the island.

Eighty-five years ago — on June 6, 1940 — just 19 members came together with a vision: to build a stronger future for working people in Hawaii. That vision became IBEW Local 1186.

From those humble beginnings, Local 1186 has grown into a powerhouse of skill, solidarity, and service — with a legacy that reaches across the islands and far beyond.

As Business Manager Damien Kim reminded us in the anniversary video, leaders like Blackie Fujikawa fought for better working conditions and benefits, making Local 1186 the first labor union in Hawaii to secure such protections, setting a precedent for every union that followed.

This local became more than a union — 1186 became a household name. Through innovative marketing, a commitment to safety, and a reputation for quality, Local 1186 became a trusted brand for union labor in Hawaii.

Your commitment to community is just as strong as your commitment to your members. Through programs like SAFE, in partnership with the Honolulu Fire Department and the American Red Cross, our members installed free smoke alarms for seniors across the islands — even saving lives shortly after some alarms were installed.

Under Damien’s leadership for nearly two decades, Local 1186 has been the go-to voice for electrical safety, training, and innovation — always leading, always serving, and always ready to answer the call. Damien has built a great team here on staff at your local union.

This month, Local 1186 members get to celebrate four times over — in Oahu on August 2, Kona on August 9, Maui on August 16, and Kauai on August 23. Because when you’ve built something this strong, it’s worth celebrating on every island you call home.

Here’s to 85 years of strength, solidarity, and service — and to the next 85 years of lighting the way forward.

Congratulations, Local 1186! Enjoy the celebration!
