Spirit of Brotherhood

Fun for the Kids: At the Local 6 summer picnic,
children line up for a potato sack race.

L.U. 6 (c,i,o,st&u), SAN FRANCISCO, CAOn Aug. 28, 2004, Local 6 held our annual summer picnic at Sigmund Stern Grove in San Francisco. The picnic committee, led by chairman Vince Cauchi, did an outstanding job providing barbeque, entertainment and kids Olympics for 600-plus members and their families.

In September, Bros. Tim Green and Bill Cullinan hosted their annual Hack Attack Golf Tournament at Sharp Park golf course in Pacifica. This tourney exemplifies the true spirit of brotherhood, as all proceeds were donated to the family of deceased Local 6 member David Passanisi.

Also, in September, the Western States Electrical Contest was held in Reno, NV. The contest has been held annually since 1973. Representing Local 6 was Mihai "Mike" Godo, a recent inside wireman graduate of the SFJATC. We are proud to announce that Mike won first place honors in a field of 26 contestants from nine states.

Officers and staff of Local 6 wish members and their families a joyous holiday season.

Battleground State

L.U. 8 (i&mt), TOLEDO, OHThe outcome of the 2004 election was unknown at press time. We hope our efforts to evict the persona non grata from the White House were successful. If not, you better hold on to your backside. That is unless you are one of George Bushs millionaire friends.

This election year brought much attention to the Buckeye State, considered by some the pivotal battleground state. Joining a "Take Back Ohio" campaign, union volunteers walked door-to-door canvassing area neighborhoods. On Aug.28 a contingent of members from Chicago area Locals 9, 21 and 134 locals came to Local 8 to join the walks. It was great to see IBEW apprentices join the campaign. After the walks, volunteers were treated to a delicious spread featuring Lake Erie perch.

Local 8 hosted a terrific WGA golf outing Aug. 18-20. Three rounds were played at the Whiteford Valley Golf Course. The WGA tournament will be played in Dayton in 2005.

Regarding the work situation, we have two or three decent projects coming up. Jeep will put on an addition to accommodate some new lines. And a new coking facility will be built on the Toledo-Oregon line. Toledo Hospital will expand a bit as well.

New Satellite Office

L.U. 26 (ees,em,es,govt,i&mt), WASHINGTON, DCWe are pleased to announce the addition of two more agents and the opening of another satellite office as a result of our recent jurisdictional expansion. Bro. Todd Sharp will be the business agent at our new Charlottesville, VA, office. Bro. Barry Rose will work in the Roanoke office as an organizer.

Local 26 Christmas party/meetings are: Dec. 3, 8 p.m., at Sardo Hall in Forestville, MD, for those in the D.C. area; Dec. 10, in Roanoke at 7 p.m.; and Dec. 17, in Winchester at 7 p.m.

Thanks to all voters and COPE volunteers. If Kerry was elected, working people will have won. If we have four more years of Bush whacking away at unions and workers rights, our fight has just begun.

Recent local events include the: apprenticeship graduation, annual picnic and pension seminar. Retirees held a crab feast in October and a raffle drawing in November.

We mourn the deaths of Bros. James Chiarilli and Dartanya Brown; and retired Bros. Willie Welborn, William Beach Jr., Frederick Remus and Douglas Schwab.

Recent retirees are: Ronald W. Denham, Thomas D. Lynch, Willis A. Lockett Jr., Thomas L. Sunderly and James D. Dollarton Jr.

Best wishes for a joyous holiday season.

Lifesaving Award

Local 38 member Jason
Supinski (left) receives an
IBEW Lifesaving Award
presented by Pres. Gil Steele
 Jr.

L.U. 38 (i), CLEVELAND, OHOfficers and members congratulate Bro. Jason Supinski on receiving the IBEW Lifesaving Award.

While fishing from a pier on Lake Erie with his children, Jason saw a woman drowning. He reacted quickly and dove into the water to save her. He almost became a casualty himself as the panic stricken woman clawed at him and tried to climb on top of him forcing him under the water. Still without regard for himself, he kept pushing the woman toward shore. The woman and the rocks scratched him up pretty good and just when he thought it was over for the both of them, he landed in shallow water saving the womans life. We are all proud to have Jason as a brother wireman.

Work remains slow, but ISG is expected to break ground on the $50 million Hot Dip Galvanizing Line at the mill soon.

Also, Charter Steele is expected to break ground on a new $90 million mini mill in Cuyahoga Heights at the old American Steel & Wire site in early 2005.
