IBEW
Gears Up for November Elections With Mobilization 2004
(continued)
Focus on
Jobsites and Battleground States
June 2004 IBEW
Journal
Surveys have shown that the most effective electoral
work by unions takes place at the jobsite. Workers are
much more likely to read literature that is distributed
at plant gates or on the shop floor than what they receive
in their mailbox at home. This is especially important
in the battleground states.
"Swing voters" from the building trades are
second only to transportation workers in their positive
response to phone calls and letters.
The presidential campaign will be most likely won or
lost in the 16 states (See Box"The Battleground
States", that were decided by less than 5 percent
of the vote in 2000). The AFL-CIO has determined that
John Kerry must win one of the three battlegrounds states
of Missouri, Florida or Ohio to beat George Bush. The
IBEW International staff will be visiting progress meetings,
branch and industry conferences and State Associations
of Electrical Workers meetings to solicit, motivate
and recruit support from IBEW members for the November
mobilization.
To reach into nonunion households, the AFL-CIO has
established an "associate" member program
called "Working America." Through this new
program, hundreds of thousands of nonunion workers have
signed up to receive information and action packets
against Bushs anti-worker policies.

"The
IBEW has signed up 2,500 members as e-Activists. These
members have agreed to send e-mails to Congress and
to the president, distribute literature on the job,
and register to vote in November. Twenty five hundred
e-Activists is a small percentage of the over seven
hundred thousand members of the IBEW. Join the Members
Community now and become part of Mobilization 2004!"
