June 2004 IBEW Journal L.U. 8 (i&mt), TOLEDO, OHPlans are nearly complete as we prepare to host the Wiremens Golf Association Tournament Aug.18-20. We will do our best to welcome all our IBEW brothers and sisters and their families to Toledo. A successful WGA fundraiser was recently held so all we need now are volunteers, clear skies and a supply of spirits for the tournament. The work situation is still slow but there has been some movement on Book I. It will take some big jobs to get all our members back to work and it may be a year before that happens. Many Local 8 members have run out of unemployment compensation, as have so many of the 3 million other Americans who lost their jobs in the past three years. We need to stress G.W. Bushs dismal record on jobs and the economy. After all thats what beat his daddy and that may be his downfall. He can stand in front of our flag and make the dubious claim that he won the war on terror but he sure cant boast about his overall record on job creation. We need to get our message out to everyone we know, get them registered and then get them to vote for friends of labor on Election Day. Dennis C. Duffey, B.M.
L.U. 20 (em,i,mt,o,spa,t&u), DALLAS-FORT WORTH, TXIn July 2003, the membership elected officers for a three-year term: Bus. Mgr./Fin. Sec. James "Goober" Morris, Pres. Scott Stillwell, Vice Pres. Mike Partridge, Rec. Sec. Ron Scott Sr., Treas. Bill Fly, and E-Board members Curtis Leslie Jr. (chairman), Bobby Chandler, Kendall Emmett, Frank Guajardo, Robert Haney, John Myers and Brian Watson. The membership is very proud of our new Apprenticeship Training Facility. Training Dir. A. C. McAfee and staff are enjoying the new state-of- the-art single story center, which includes over 26,000 feet of classroom and laboratory facilities. State licensing for electricians has come to the Lone Star State. After the dust settles, we hope the new licensing requirements will bring a new focus and need for highly trained and skilled IBEW electricians. In March, Local 20 entered into contract negotiations involving our Inside Branch. We attribute our slow work picture in part to these ongoing negotiations. Larry Billman, Asst. B.M. L.U. 22 (i,rts&spa), OMAHA, NEOur Committee On Political Education is gearing up for the 2004 election cycle. Local 22 COPE committee chairman is Jim Skarda and members are Kevin Wetuski and Mike Scarpello. The committee has provided mail-in voter registration forms, absentee ballot applications and labor endorsed candidate lists, all of which are available at the monthly meetings or at the local union office. Do your part to get involved and informed on the issues. Taking time to vote is a privilege and an obligation as a citizen. Make sure your family and friends make their voices heard also. VOTE! Local 22 pays tribute to the memory of Bros. Walter Williams and Harry Bremer, both of whom passed away in February 2004. Lloyd Freyer, P.S. L.U. 24 (es,i&spa), BALTIMORE, MDOn March 29, a labor-wide contingent of building trade unionists went down to Annapolis. Our purpose was to be seen and heard, to let the politicians see the faces and hear the voices of those their policies affect. Political participation is vitally important. Just like a foreman "bird-dogging" a mechanic on the job, we must bird-dog the politician whenever we get the opportunity. Most AFL-CIO unions were represented at the "Legislative Night" event, but not one of them could come close to Local 24s numbers. Four bus loads of union activists. It was cold, it was late and it was on a Monday. We thank those who were there. For those who could not attend, you missed Bro. Jim Kauffman screaming righteousness from the risers. But hey, there is always next year. Local 24 extends condolences to the families of the following brothers who passed away earlier this year: Norman S. Gaphardt, Frank Revella and Ferdinand W. Kalbskopf Jr. Michael Lange, P.S. L.U. 26 (ees,em,es,govt,i&mt), WASHINGTON, DCLocal 26 had an impressive turnout for Legislative Night in Annapolis, MD. Our members joined other Building Trades locals to present a united front to our senators and congressmen. The work picture has been brisk. The IBEW Construction Conference and the Building Trades Conference were held downtown in March. We are making plans for our golf outing and the local union picnic. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Feb. 3 to kick off an historic all-union construction project at Tysons Corner Mall in Northern Virginia. The National Electrical Benefit Fund (NEBF) is a major investor in the $150 million project. Bro. Joe Brehon retired in March. A 30-year member, Joe has served the local as business agent and on the Executive and Examining boards. He worked for the Maryland State & DC AFL-CIO from 1994-2001 and then returned to the local union office. Other recent Local 26 retirees: Douglas Barkes, Richard Mellow, George Simpson, Joseph Wynne Jr., Robert Neary, Philip Place and John Cullison III. Local 26 is saddened to report the deaths of Bros. Roger Bourne, Glen Patty and Harold Keener; and retired Bros. Daniel Mangin, James Long and Charlie Guthrie. Charles E. Graham, B.M. |
