Safeway Strike over Health Care
Benefits Important to All Workers
February 17, 2004
Workers at Safeway and its affiliated stores in
California have been on a bitter four-month strike for a new contract.
Among the critical issues is protecting decent, affordable health
care for the 70,000 workers, who are members of the United Food
and Commercial Workers (UFCW).
Safeway has repeatedly claimed that it needs to slash the pay and
benefits of its workforce in order to compete with the low-cost
grocery chains, especially Wal-Mart.
The Safeway workers fight is everyones fight. If this trend continues,
the lowest common denominator set by companies like Wal-Mart
will undercut the pay and benefit standards in every industry.
