Softball Champs

The Local 6 defending championship softball team.

L.U. 6 (c,i,o,st&u), SAN FRANCISCO, CA--Local 6 hosted the 7th annual Ninth District Softball Tournament Aug. 16-17 in Burligame, CA. Our defending championship team, managed by wireman Jim Feflie won again, defeating Local 595 in the final. Local 6s second team, managed by retiree Don Pope and wireman Anthony Cruz, placed third. Feflies parents, Barbara and Jim Sr., along with volunteers, prepared food for the tournament weekend. The Most Valuable Player honor went to Nick Canalita for his scouting and assistant coaching.

The Local 6 annual picnic was held in September at Sigmund Stern Grove in San Francisco. Bro. Vince Cauchi and the picnic committee did an incredible job. Live music was provided by the Zydeco Flames and Golden Gate Bridge electrician Jim McKnight and his band. City Supervisor and mayoral candidate Gavin Newsom attended.

Also in September, the SFJATC hosted the Western States Electrical Contest. The competition featured 24 contestants from the Eighth and Ninth Districts squaring off in ability tests including conduit bending, motor controls, residential and commercial wiring. First place honors went to Mark Perotti of Local 46; James Mowry of Local 280 took second place; and Local 6s own Sean Weber took third place. Thanks to SFJATC Dir. Dan Whooley along with 25 volunteers who made this event a huge success.

'We Stand as One

L.U. 16 (i), EVANSVILLE, IN--Labor Day is traditionally a big celebration in our area. Posey, Warick and Vanderburgh counties share the responsibilities and pride in putting together a three-day Festival of Labor. The theme this year was "We Stand As One" in support of all who serve in our armed forces. There are carnival rides, food booths, craft shows, fireworks, motocross and demolition derbies. Friendly competitions in bowling and horseshoe and washer pitching contests. Pageants for Queen, Little Miss and Mister and talent shows. Dances, gospel sings, car shows and a poker run. The big draw for Labor Day itself is the parade through the hosting town with all the local unions, political parties and many organizations and floats.

Sept. 6 was the date for Local 16s annual family picnic. There is always good food, toys and games, bingo and fellowship and this year 115 pins were given to members for their years of work in the union, and 13 new retirees were honored.

And Then Isabel

L.U. 26 (ees,em,es,govt,i&mt), WASHINGTON, DC--As of this writing, Local 26 weathered a very wet summer and endured Hurricane Isabels fury as well! Water surges, downed power lines and trees and thousands of homes and businesses without power for days were felt in her aftermath. Thanks to Local 1900 members, as well as to other union linemen from different parts of the country for tireless efforts restoring power.

Bro. Franny Olshefski coordinated another highly successful picnic. Thanks to volunteers who helped to make it an enjoyable day.

The Pension Trustees were pleased to be able to increase benefits! Journeymens future benefits were raised $2, Residential and Teledata workers $1, and current retirees received a 2.5 percent increase. With the negative returns for the stock market, we have been very fortunate to be able to give our retirees increases for each of the last three years.

Local 26 is saddened to report the following deaths: Retired Bros. Ronald Harris, Bernard J. Baurle, Richard Martin, George Mortimer and William Terrett, III; and Bros. William Timberlake, II, ORiley Moonasingh, Robert Powell and Gilbert Hayes, Jr.

The following brothers have retired: Donald L. Hipsley, Thomas E. Booth, Stephen M. Sydnor, Jefferson W. Davis, Richard J. Barkanic, Richard C. Hamrick and Ben J. Segreti.
