2003 George Meany Award Mark Moyer, a 30-year IBEW member recently was presented organized labors highest award for union members who contribute outstanding service to youth through the Boy Scouts of America. Brother Moyer is a member of IBEW Local 1600, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
Brother Moyer received the 2003 George Meany Awarda national award presented through the community services committees of AFL-CIO Central Labor Councilsat a special awards ceremony attended by labor representatives, public officials and fellow Scouters. Ronald M. Achey, president of United Way of Greater Lehigh Valley and AFL-CIO Community Services liaison, commended Brother Moyers 20-plus years of volunteer leadership in scouting and community service. The Lehigh Valley Labor Council presented the award. "Mark Moyer has been a Boy Scout troop leader and an Anthracite District merit badge counselor since 1982," said George Meany Award Chairman David B. Binder, IBEW Local 1600 Unit 4 vice chairman. Moyer also is a recipient of the Boy Scouts of America Award of Merit, the Scouts highest award to acknowledge a volunteer for service to youth. He is a member of the Minsi Trails Council Executive Board and recently was elected Anthracite District chairman, the top volunteer leader in the district. An IBEW member since 1973, Brother Moyer is an employee of PPL Utilities, formerly Pennsylvania Power & Light. Moyer is the third Local 1600 member to receive the George Meany Award. David Binder received the award in 1995 as did retiree Thomas Woodring in 1996. These brothers humanitarian work with the Boy Scouts exemplifies the IBEW commitment to volunteer community service as the "Union of Hearts and Minds." |
