House Narrowly Upholds
Overtime Regs; July 14, 2003 The U.S House of Representatives, by a vote of 213-210 defeated a provision that would have barred the Department of Labor (DOL) from implementing proposed regulations that would cut overtime pay for millions of workers. The White House, the Republican leadership of the House and business groups mounted an all-out effort to block the amendment. Organized labor worked equally hard to win support. The defeat is a setback, but the issue is far from being decided. Future Congressional action is still possible, and the DOL could alter the proposals in face of overwhelming public outcry, although that is unlikely. "Congress will have a chance to revisit this issue, and we urge workers to tell members to protect their overtime rights," said AFL-CIO President John Sweeney. "The close vote shows just how important it is to have more labor-friendly representatives in the House," said IBEW International President Ed Hill. "We want our members to remember this vote when they go the polls in 2004." |
