Avaya Update #1
Tuesday, May 6
At todays opening session, co-chairmen CWA Vice President Ralph
Maly and the IBEWs Dennis Slaman explained the unions intent in
this round of bargaining. Tom Burk, Avaya labor relations vice president,
gave his opening remarks with an emphasis on Avayas business condition.
He said Avaya was interested in achieving a contract that would
be fair to the employees while recognizing the financial problems
facing the company.
We discussed the logistics of bargaining over the next few weeks
as well as the need for Avaya to understand the unions role in
the future of the company if it is to succeed.
The company presented proposed changes in the LCTOP, which created
a great deal of discussion. Tomorrow the company is scheduled to
present proposals on LTP (Lucent Transfer Plan), Academic Awards,
ERCs (Employee Resource Center) and the various coordinator functions.
In the afternoon the bargaining subcommittees met to discuss joint
issues and how to proceed going forward.
Bargaining will resume tomorrow. Updates will be posted at the
end of the session.
In Unity,
IBEW Bargaining Team
