IBEW Joins March Of Dimes Event May 8, 2003 More than 80 International Office staff, friends and family joined the March of Dimes annual Walkathon on May 4 to raise money for the prevention of premature births.
Led by International Secretary-Treasurer Jerry OConnor, the scenic route covered popular monuments and landmarks, including the Washington, Jefferson and FDR memorials as well as the cherry tree-ringed Tidal Basin and the National Mall. From the IBEW walkers start at the International Office to the end at the same location, the route measured approximately seven miles. The total collected was $20,325, which just reached this years goal. "Once again, IBEW members and staff proved that the union of hearts and minds is more than a motto," said IBEW President Edwin D. Hill, whose travel schedule prevented him from attending this year. "Everybody came back tired but happy," said Joanne Lester, who coordinated the effort for the IBEW. The IBEW team has historically been one of the largest participants in the walk. "When it comes down to it, people are very generous when it comes to a good cause." |
