Retirement 

With great sadness, the IBEW announces the death of retired International Representative Michael Broderick on January 20, 2002. A resident of Middlebury, Connecticut, Brother Broderick was 86. He served for 12 years as an International Representative on the Second District Staff and retired in October 1980 following an active IBEW career of more than 33 years.

A native of Connecticut, Brother Broderick was initiated into then-Local 660, Waterbury, in January 1947. He served his local with dedication as business manager, president, treasurer and Executive Board member. He was trustee of the local union Pension Plan and the Health and Welfare Plan. He also was secretary of the apprenticeship program.

In November 1968, Brother Broderick was appointed an Inter national Representative and assigned to the Second District. He was appointed to the Council on Industrial Relations in 1967.

His labor-related activities included service as president of the Connecticut State Building and Construction Trades Council. He also served on the board of directors, Waterbury Non-Profit Development Corporation.

A World War II veteran, Brother Broderick served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre. He was a member of Elks Lodge 265, the Sheridan Council Knights of Columbus and the Public Speaking Club in Waterbury.

With great sadness, the IBEW announces the death of retired International Office Director William F. Ferry on February 10, 2002. He served in the Agreement Approval Department from 1969 until his retirement in 1987, becoming director in 1972.

Brother Ferry, 79, was a native of Pennsylvania who was initiated into Local 30 in Erie, Pennsylvania, in 1946 and was a member of another local that was amalgamated into Local 712, Beaver, Pennsylvania. Before his appointment as International Representative in 1969, he served his local in a variety of posts, then became business manager and financial secretary in 1957.

At the International Office, he reviewed all new contracts before the International Presidents signature.
He also reviewed project labor agreements, strike sanctions and assents (contstruction only), and handled inquiries on agreement policy and agreement language.

He was also assigned to the Council on Industrial Relations (CIR) to assist with agreement policy and language.

The IBEW extends deepest condolences to Brother Ferrys family and friends.

With great sadness, the IBEW announces the death of former Utility Department Director Robert M. Macdonald on January 31, 2002, at age 73. Brother Macdonald served as Utility Department director from 1982 until his retirement in 1993, following 43 years of dedicated service in the IBEW.

A native of Brooklyn, New York, he was initiated into then-Local 1134, Elizabeth, New Jersey, in 1949. He served his local in various elected positions from 1954 until 1973.

Brother Macdonald was appointed International Representative and assigned to the Utility Department in December 1973. He served as IBEW System Council U-2 secretary-treasurer from 1961 to 1973. Prior to his appointment as International Representative, he served his local as vice president, Executive Board member, and shop steward. He began his career as a lineman with the New Jersey Bell Telephone Company. From 1949 to 1973, he worked in the electric distribution department of Public Service Electric & Gas Company of New Jersey.

A graduate of the labor studies program at Rutgers University Institute of Labor Relations, his labor-related activities were extensive. He was a member of the American Society of Testing and Materials board of directors, and was vice chairman of the ASTM committee on electrical protective equipment for workers. An active member of the American National Standards Institute, he served on four ANSI safety standard committees. Additionally, he was a member of the Trade Union Consulting Committee, Rutgers Institute of Labor Relations; a member of the board of directors, Vocational Rehabilitation Hospital, Middlesex County, New Jersey; and a member of the Executive Board, Project Action, New Brunswick, New Jersey.

The IBEW extends deepest condolences to Brother Macdonalds wife, Charlotte, and their entire family.

With great sadness, the IBEW announces the death of retired International Representative Clement M. Rush on January 23, 2002. Age 94, Brother Rush was a
65-year IBEW member. He served with distinction for 20 years as an Eleventh District International Representative.

He retired in January 1970 after he had achieved more than 32 years of active IBEW service.

A longtime resident of Moorhead, Minnesota, Brother Rush was born in Hazelton, North Dakota.

He began his IBEW career in 1937 with his initiation into Local 949, Burnsville, Minnesota.

Subsequently, he became a member of Local 1426, Grand Forks, North Dakota. Brother Rush served Local 949 as assistant business manager of the Fargo Branch Unit from 1937-1945. Later, at Local 1426, he was business manager-financial secretary from 1947-1950 and president from 1945-47.

Appointed Eleventh District International Representative in August 1950, he served with dedication in that capacity until his retirement.

Earlier in his career, he was employed by Northern States Power Company for 17 years, during which he worked at Fargo Power Plant.

Brother Rush was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He attended North Dakota State University and served with the Minnesota State Guard.

The IBEW extends sincere sympathy to his wife, Mary Alice, and their family.
