System Council
Comes to December 6, 2002 Four days after their three-year contract expired, the system council representing 2,100 utility workers at Florida Power reached a tentative agreement with the company on Thursday. The agreement, aided by a federal mediator, comes a week after the workers voted to reject the companys final offer and authorized System Council U-8 leaders to declare a strike. "Its got good money and good benefits," said U-8 Business Manager W.O. "Butch" Enyard. "There are areas that are going to be a sore spot for some people, but its still a good contract and its a competitive one in the Southeast." The three-year pact includes annual raises of at least three percent; it also contains some concessions on changes to the sick-leave policy and the pension plan. Enyard said that compromise after two months of contentious negotiations became possible only after the company dropped a demand for changes in arbitration procedures. A vote by the membership on the proposal has been delayed until December 18 because 100 members opted to travel north to the Carolinas to help restore power to those devastated by ice storms earlier this week. |
