Local 50, Dominion Power Reach Tentative Agreement
A two-week old strike of 3,700 members of IBEW Local 50 against Dominion Power came to an end with the signing of a tentative agreement on August 15. Members of Local 50 will vote on the contract by mail ballot. Click here for more details.
Spirit in the Dominion Virginia/North Carolina Power picket lines remains strong as 3,700 IBEW members walk the line and wait for negotiations to resume.
A Monday rally in northern Virginia drew hundreds and a rally in Richmond is slated for Wednesday. Members of the Richmond-based local are scattered throughout Virginia, North Carolina and West Virginia.
Local 50 negotiators sent a proposal to Dominion on Friday. Members and a federal mediator were to return to talks with Dominion Wednesday, August 14, based on the union's initiative. Major issues include pension and retiree benefits.
An article in a Hampton Roads newspaper Tuesday compared the retirement benefits Dominion management offers its workers to the generous ones it gives its own executives.
"Overcompensated executives with little or no accountabilityits the status quo at Dominion Resources and almost every other publicly-traded company in the United States," said Newport News Daily Press columnist Jim Spencer. "Think about that the next time you see strikers walking the picket line."
