IBEW Member Wins Congressional Primary in California March 8, 2002 In a hard fought race, sister Linda Sanchez of IBEW Local Union 441 defeated five other candidates to win the democratic nomination for Californias 39th congressional district. Sanchez garnered 34 percent of the vote, to City Councilman Hector De La Torres 29 percent and State Assemblywoman Sally Havices 19 percent. She now faces a general election race against Republican Tim Escobar and Libertarian Richard Newhouse to represent the newly redrawn district that covers southeast Los Angeles County. The district has twice as many registered Democrats as Republicans, and has a large Hispanic population that gives her a strong edge in November. |
