MIDWEST ORGANIZING WINS! April 2001 IBEW Journal Located in Grand Island, Nebraska, IBEW Local 1597 reports several organizing victories. On January 17, 2001, 25 employees working for the city of Broken Bow, Nebraska, voted 24-0 for representation by Local 1597. These municipal employees include water treatment and plant operators as well as street, water and clerical workers. The IBEW local also organized 15 employees working at Niobrara Rural Electric Membership Association located in ONeill, Nebraska. Local 1597 President/Business Manager Ronald Callihan said the employees voted by an overwhelming 14-1 to gain a union voice in their workplace. "Local 1597 also conducted a successful organizing campaign at Custer Rural Public Power District in Broken Bow, Nebraska," reported Eleventh District International Vice President William C. Eads. In the representation election held November 5, 1999, 36 employees at the utility chose IBEW Representation. The unit, which includes linemen, meter readers and maintenance workers, ratified a two-year contract on May 9, 2000. |
