The greatest service that one can make to mankind is the saving of a human life.

Those words are emblazoned on the IBEW Lifesaving Award presented to members who have performed this greatest service in the course of their work. Recently, two members of Local 29, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, joined the honor roll of IBEW heroes.

Brothers Dan Gearhart and Paul DiMatteo were working on a service crew in the West View area when a woman came running out of her home screaming that her husband was having a heart attack. Paul called 911. Both men began to perform CPR on the man and continued until the paramedics arrived. The man was taken to a local hospital and survived. A doctor on duty said that the victim would not have made it without the quick action of Dan and Paul.

This is but the latest example of heroism displayed by IBEW members on the job. Undoubtedly, there will be more in 2001.
