IBEW Recognized For Job Safety December 12, 2001 Two Pennsylvania locals have been recognized by the state government for their commitment to job safety. Pennsylvania electrical manufacturing Local 1914, Harwick, and members of Pittsburghs Local 5 employed by Lighthouse Electric Co. received Governors Safety awards. Local 1914 has 300 members manufacturing pumps and motors for aircraft carriers and submarines on a contract with the U.S. Navy. The workers are employed by Westinghouse Government Services Company Electro Mechanical Division in Cheswick, Pennsylvania. Tom Bolton, vice president of Local 1914, said the designation is based on a Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry evaluation of the work place. Only 14 companies in the state received the award at the Governors Occupational Safety and Health Conference October 29 and 30 in Hershey. The award will make the workers eligible for lower workers compensation and insurance rates, Bolton said. Local 5 workers at Lighthouse Electric logged more than 125,000 hours of work without a lost-time accident, said state Labor and Industry Deputy Secretary for Safety Robert Moore. "The workers exemplify the companys safety motto: Safety is an attitude, not a program, and safety training is an investment, not an expense." Approximately 200 IBEW members work for Lighthouse, which has recently been working to wire PNC Park, the new baseball stadium to replace aging Three Rivers as home to the Pittsburgh Pirates, said Local 5 Business Manager John Chalovich. Local Union 5 Business Agent Denny Eiker nominated Lighthouse, which was chosen based on its use of joint safety committees, innovative safety policies and safety improvements. |
