Railroad Retirement Reform UPDATE

Update 12/5/01 - The U.S. Senate passed the Railroad Retirement and Survivors Improvement Act of 2001 by a vote of 90-9 on December 5, 2001.  Thanks to all who called!  More

Update 12/4/01 - The U.S. Senate on Monday evening voted 94 to 1 to defeat the Lott Amendment and 81 to 15 in favor of Sen. Daschle's motion to move Railroad Retirement Reform to a vote on the Senate floor.

We expect at least 20 killer amendments to be introduced on Tuesday (December 4th) in the continuing effort by opponents. It is essential to continue your telephone calls with the message, "Vote NO on all amendments to the Railroad Retirement Reform."

Important votes coming up today 12/3/01.

The first vote at 5:00 pm will be on a motion to add energy and other legislation to the Railroad Retirement Bill. That could kill the Railroad Retirement Bill.

The next vote at 5:30 pm will be on a motion by Senator Daschle to move ahead on consideration of the Railroad Retirement Bill.

Tell the Senate to oppose the Lott motion and to keep other bills off of the Railroad Retirement Bill.

Tell the Senate to support the Daschle motion to move ahead on consideration on the Railroad Retirement Bill.

Tell the Senate to support all votes that move the Railroad Retirement Bill to final passage and oppose all amendments.

Although this legislation passed the House twice by large margins (the last time was 384 to 33), and there are 75 Senate cosponsors, it is anticipated that a small group of opponents will try to delay and/or extend consideration as much as possible to frustrate passage.  We need your help to make sure this does not derail the bill!
