President Bush fires another shot at unemployed workers . . .

November 1, 2001

Bushs Cabinet Official blasted Senator Max Baucus (D-MT) plan to have the government provide subsidies to the unemployed to help pay health insurance premiums. Treasury Secretary Paul H. ONeill yesterday dismissed the plan as a huge reach and change in policy that would result in the government paying for a selected portion of a familys monthly budget expenses.

Lawrence B. Lindsey, Director of the National Economic Council and R. Glen Hubbard, Chairman of the Council of Advisors, said they believed that extended health insurance subsidies would have unintended effect of raising the level of unemployment that would spark inflation, in part because workers would lose the incentive to search for new jobs.
