New Jersey Governors Race: Candidate Schundler Backs Anti-Union Laws August 22, 2001 The Republican nominee in the New Jersey governors race, Bret D. Schundler, has endorsed two anti-union laws strongly opposed by labor and working people, The New York Times reported on Wednesday, August 15, 2001. Schundler has endorsed both right-to-work legislation and paycheck-protection laws, according to the newspaper article entitled, In Questionnaire, Schundler Backs Two Laws Seen As Anti-Union. Mr. Schundler reportedly stated his views in an April 29 questionnaire he filled out at the request of the Christian Coalition. New Jersey AFL-CIO President Charles Wowkanech was quoted by the Times as saying of Schundlers stance, I think this is going to light the fuse on a keg of dynamite for the union movement. Because you cant say it any more clearly. If you want a right-to-work state, it means you want to put us out of business." Richard Hurd, a professor of labor studies at Cornell University said that he could not recall a single major politician Democratic or Republican, who had pushed for right-to-work in the Northeast, the newspaper reported. New Jersey is among the top five states in union membership, with approximately 762,000 members, comprising 20.8 percent of the state's work force. The IBEW has some 34,500 members in the state. |
