The 2012 presidential political season is behind us and the local and state election season is fast approaching. While we were successful in re-electing President Obama for a second term, we must now turn our attention to our local political leaders. Please keep in mind those who have our best interests at heart.

L.U. 12 (i,o&se), PUEBLO, CO — Local 12 Member to Member outreach and training successfully took place Oct. 27, 2012, with the help of Int. Reps. Guy P. Runco and Debra L. Harget. An enthusiastic group led by Bus. Mgr. Dean Grinstead gathered to train for Member to Member outreach contact. Local 12 is proud to report that over 290 brothers and sisters were contacted. We thank all those who volunteered their Saturday for the event.

The Parade of Lights was held in downtown Pueblo on Saturday, Nov. 24. Our first parade float in recent memory was coordinated by the Local 12 Ladies Auxilliary, apprentices and members. We thank everyone who helped with this event, especially Jason Olds, Ronan Carbajal and Susan Johnson. Hard work and the time devoted were invaluable in making this a fun event for our members and our community.

L.U. 16 (i), EVANSVILLE, IN — The 19th annual Ritzy's Fantasy of Lights was blessed with three beautiful fall setup weekends and by dedicated members of IBEW Local 16 who willingly shared their talents to improve the lives of others. Proceeds from this mile-long seasonal display are used to fund rehabilitation services for handicapped children and adults, regardless of their ability to pay.

In an attempt to repair damage from recent challenging negotiations and ongoing difficulties, leadership from IBEW Local 16 and NECA members met for a two-day conference with the goal of improving understanding and creating a better working relationship. Committees were formed to highlight the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to the local union electrical industry. Thanks to those who are serving.

On the national level, labor fared reasonably well in the November 2012 elections. Unfortunately, however, those opposed to working families now constitute a super-majority in the Indiana House, Senate and governorship. Undoubtedly, even more pressure will be brought to bear on workers and their households. Members now must stand together more than ever to actively support the efforts of this hall to salvage what legal rights and protections remain.

L.U. 22 (i,rts&spa), OMAHA, NE — Local 22 has been fortunate with work this winter. Our book has dropped from 300 to 65, and we have been putting travelling brothers and sisters to work as well. At this writing, the "fast track" Council Bluffs Facility South Data Center has called 150 workers in recent weeks with more referrals in sight as of press time. The nuclear plant upgrade has also called many workers. And there is another new data center on the horizon, which will be another "fast track" job that could take up to 125 more electricians.

There is also a lot of anticipated work coming up in Local 22 Area B. One of our signatory contractors has opened a satellite shop in Kearney, NE, with work being predicted in Kearney, York, and Grand Island, NE. It is great to be able to represent our local in the outstate areas, and these are welcome developments.

Training Dir. Ed Karnish received an award from the Department of Defense for his work in supporting and helping employee participation in America's National Guard. Congratulations, Ed!

Tim Heavey, the Christmas party chairman, collected over $1,200 from our members to buy gifts for the annual Local 22 Kid's Christmas Party. Great work, Tim!

L.U. 24 (es,i&spa), BALTIMORE, MD — As Local 24 closed out 2012, we were experiencing lingering effects of the recent economy that rivaled those of the Great Depression. The membership's unwavering dedication in tough times provides us certain knowledge that we will recover.

A new activity for Local 24 was undertaken by some 20 members and their families in December. The mayor's Annual Baltimore Christmas Parade was held Sunday, Dec. 2 in Hampden. Local 24 members worked with Calvert Hall and Friends High School students to support three inflatable balloons in the parade, attended by 10,000 people. Thanks to Local 24 member Chuck Soul and his family for coordinating the event.

On Saturday, Dec. 8, the Annual Children's Christmas Party at our hall was a great success with 1,400 members and family members attending. Each child received a toy and each family received a picture with Santa. All enjoyed lunch and a puppet show. We thank our Santas, Rob Panuska and Jim Smith, and Mrs. Claus, Robyn Smith. Among special guests were retired Bro. Ron Williams and his wife, Phyllis Williams, who served as our Santa and Mrs. Claus for 20 years beginning in 1989. They visited from western Pennsylvania and Ron, who has had recent health issues, dressed as Santa for the kids. Such dedication was reflected by all the party volunteers. Many members and their families have participated in this event for generations. Thanks to our members who make this a special event every year.

Attended by 270 members and guests, both active and retired, the banquet was a tremendous success. Moving the day to a Saturday, starting an hour earlier, and moving the date closer to Christmas, were changes all well received.

The 2013 Awards Banquet/Christmas Party has already been set: the Saturday before Thanksgiving, 5 p.m. cocktails, 6 p.m. dinner and program. This is not just for members getting awards; it is for every member and their significant other — and it is completely free. We will see you there in November!

Congratulations to all of our members earning an award this year. Awards are presented for 20 years of service and every five years thereafter. This year, Andy Meyer received his 70- year service award! The service award is a lapel pin and glass mug commemorating years of service. IBEW pensioners from the last 12 months are also recognized. Each receives a pension pin and the IBEW retirees' gold watch.

Work has been good as of late and we expect work opportunities to continue. Zenith Electric was awarded the Southwest Hospital project, and Gate Electric was awarded the build outs for Tucker Ellis in the Ernst & Young office tower.

L.U. 42 (catv,em,govt,lctt&o), HARTFORD, CT — We held our monthly union meeting on Dec. 13, 2012, followed by our annual Holiday Buffet.

At the meeting, Local 42 "A" members received their years-of-service pins. Awarded for their years of IBEW service were members with 45, 40, 30, 25, 20, 15 and 10 years of service. Congratulations to all of you who received pins. We also congratulate David Lambert and Louis Faraci for receiving their retirement awards as well.

The work picture for Local 42 is still holding steady. For the future outlook, the only thing projected is the highline and substation.

The IBEW Local 42 Occupational Safety & Health Education (OSHE) department started up a new Apprentice Lineman Boot Camp on Dec. 2, 2012. The training classes are still being held almost every weekend at Local 42's union hall. At this writing, the certification classes were scheduled to resume after the first of the New Year.

In the month of October 2012, we had storm work in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. We thank all of the IBEW contractors and Local 42 "A" members, "BA" members and tree trimming crews for all of the hard work they did to safely restore the power.

L.U. 46 (as,c,cs,em,es,et,i,mar,mo,mt,rtb,rts&st) SEATTLE, WA — IBEW Local 46 members, family and staff helped to bring victory to nearly all of our endorsed political races in Washington for the 2012 general election.

Our efforts to target these races and advocate for the political interests of workers were successful. IBEW-endorsed Gov. Jay Inslee and Atty. Gen. Bob Ferguson took over operations of our state's highest elected offices. They share our values on the need for job growth, reliable workers' compensation, unemployment insurance, project labor agreements, apprenticeship and prevailing wage.

Worker-driven locals and councils around the state weighed in on many political offices and initiatives. The successful results can be viewed in their entirety at http://vote.wa.gov/results/current/.

We won by setting a clear goal and sticking to it. We went out of our way to impact the agenda by participating in proven member education campaigns like the Labor Neighbor program. We set high goals for member participation among rank and file and union officers. The goal of all Washington IBEW locals was to fill 360 Labor Neighbor volunteer shifts. We met our goal and that is a powerful testament to the relevance of our union.

L.U. 58 (em,i,rtb&spa), DETROIT, MI — Local 58 wishes to recognize all of the members who headed out East after Hurricane Sandy to aid in power restoration efforts. There have been stories told of devastation, frustration, triumph and gratitude from every one of the 78 electricians who made the trip. After our return we feel a bond with the people of New York and New Jersey who suffered and persevered. However, there are two Local 58 brothers who deserve special attention, Dean Wosnick and Shawn Nicholas, who went above and beyond the call of duty.

Dean was working on Long Island when he came upon an older woman who had stayed when all others had evacuated. She had been staying in her home for over a week with no lights and no heat — and the Nor'easter was approaching. With no way to restore power to her home, Dean decided to leave his own generator.

Shawn's story is longer and more tragic; he performed CPR to save a life. His efforts were in vain but he stepped up and did the right thing, something many of us can't do. Both men shrug off their actions as "just who we are." I say they are heroes.

L.U. 94 (lctt,nst&u), CRANBURY, NJ — Hurricane Sandy left her mark on New Jersey, the members of Local 94, and IBEW members throughout the state. Utility workers and tree trimmers gave it their best shot at an expedient restoration. Work from the storm will go on for years — including the hardening of the electric infrastructure from generating locations, to distribution and transmission. Thank you to all of our members who worked tirelessly and safely to get the power back on.

An effort is underway by the IBEW and the AFL-CIO to improve and strengthen relationships among young workers and more experienced members. Here at Local 94 we are holding discussions on how to foster participation and solidarity among both the younger and the older members, and how to keep a strong relationship within the local. It is our hope that these discussions will strengthen our membership now and in the future.

L.U. 102 (em,govt,i,mt,o&ws), PATERSON, NJ — Local 102 signed an agreement with Union County College providing all apprentices an associate degree upon completion. Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno toured Local 102 and was on hand for the agreement signing with UCC. Bus. Mgr. Patrick Delle Cava guided the lieutenant governor through our facility featuring training labs and a computer room where we teach CAD & BIM (Computer-Aided Design & Building Information Modeling). The lieutenant governor was impressed by the training provided and expressed her concerns for the building trade community.

"There's no disguising that this has been a difficult time for trade workers as the nation's economy dampened the business community's plans for commercial development and investment," Lt. Gov. Guadagno said. "But as our economic outlook improves, the outlook for commercial investment and workers will improve along with it. And as New Jersey's communities most hurt by Hurricane Sandy begin to recover and rebuild, the demand for trade workers, including electrical trade workers, will require the best skilled men and women to do the job."

We thank the lieutenant governor for her time and efforts. We also thank Gov. Chris Christie and his administration not only for their commitment to the building trades, but also for their commitment to New Jersey as we rebuild from Hurricane Sandy.

L.U. 110 (em,i,rts,spa&u), ST. PAUL, MN — IBEW Local 110 had 50 volunteers help set up displays for our annual Holiday Lights in the Park at Lake Phalen. This marks our fifth year of helping give back to our community with this great event. To date, we have raised over $170,000 for four charities. Our volunteer base for this event continues to grow each year. These volunteer events are a great way to talk with our brothers and sisters outside of work. Our Holiday Lights in the Park is just another way that the IBEW is building better communities and stronger solidarity every day.

At press time IBEW Local 110 was also scheduled to hold our blood drive on Jan. 17. Thank you to all members who signed up to donate.

L.U. 124 (ees,em,i,mar,rts,se&spa), KANSAS CITY, MO — Kansas City is in better economic condition. Our hours are rising and calls are steadily coming in for large projects: the Ford plant, NNSA Honeywell and the LaCygne power plant. Local 124's participation in business and economic development helped propel these and other local projects. A home-grown, Local 124-driven project agreement known as the KC Construction Partners also secured work for members on several projects, including restoration of the historic Truman Courthouse.

Politically, Missouri did fairly well in the 2012 election. We re-elected U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill, who defeated nationally disgraced Todd Akin; and we also successfully defended the governor's office against a self-funded millionaire who couldn't wait to sign "right-to-work" and give up prevailing wage.

We will still have battles on these issues because the state Senate and House are still anti-labor. We need to start our pro-labor media push immediately to change public opinion. Kudos to the I.O. Media Department for our IBEW national television ad. It has been well-received by members and nonmembers.

L.U. 134 (catv,em,govt,i,mt,rtb,rts,spa&t), CHICAGO, IL — Boyle Auditorium was used as a satellite headquarters for the Obama campaign just prior to the president's re-election. One month before her 2012 election victory, then-candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives Tammy Duckworth spoke to us at a standing room only union meeting. Last spring, the governor and the mayor attended functions that we hosted. These are just a few examples that illustrate Local 134's renewed political presence, from the offices of mayor to governor to U.S. Congress and beyond. This political involvement has re-energized our entire membership.

With Bus. Mgr. Terry Allen's foresight, a newly formed Political Task Force of hundreds of volunteers, including retired and unemployed members, went door to door, conducted phone banks, registered voters, promoted early voting, sent blast e-⁠mails and canvassed mass transit stations. We "left it all on the field" in supporting and getting out the vote for labor friendly candidates in Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana and Ohio.

These past 16 months, monthly meeting attendance and member enthusiasm is at an all-time high. We are empowered and motivated. Newly elected U.S. Rep. Duckworth called to thank us for all our help, as did numerous victorious local candidates. Best wishes as we all move forward.

L.U. 150 (es,i,rts&spa), WAUKEGAN, IL — Greetings, Local 150 members! Hopefully a new year will bring a change in all of our fortunes. Now is the time to hold all of our elected officials' feet to the fire. Please write, phone or e-mail them with your thoughts and concerns. They need to hear how their inactivity affects each and every American and certainly their own constituents.

With it becoming harder and harder to travel to other states for work due to everyone wanting a piece of the pie with their licensing procedures, please consider taking some classes this spring semester at the JATC. It will help you if you decide to take a state licensing exam in another state and if nothing else it avails you of the opportunity to brush up on your knowledge and skills. There has been a mailing and you can always check the Web site.

Applications for the 2013 Local 150 Scholarship are available at the union hall. It doesn't take much time to fill out and the essay portion shouldn't take more than a few hours. Come on down and get an application!

L.U. 158 (i,it,mar,mt&spa), GREEN BAY, WI — Local 158's work outlook has slowed quite a bit. Point Beach Nuclear Plant had a small outage in November 2012; however it didn't require much manpower. The new VA clinic project is also coming to an end. We are still employing many members on the Lambeau field project and some other projects ramping up. We got some bad news in October when Dominion, the owner of our other nuclear plant, Kewaunee Nuclear Power Plant, announced plans to decommission the plant because they could not find any buyers for the plant. This will affect us greatly.

In September 2012, Local 158 was host local for the IBEW Sixth District Progress Meeting and Women's Conference. An IBEW Young Workers Conference was also held in addition to the regular conferences. The event began with the Women's Conference, where many women gave their stories about working in the IBEW. Then the young workers offered their ideas. The Progress meeting also featured many excellent speakers, who got the audience motivated for the 2012 election, made us laugh, or got us ready for the tailgate party. Yes, tailgate party. On Thursday night the Green Bay Packers hosted the Chicago Bears at Lambeau field. So Int. Vice Pres. Lonnie R. Stephenson held a tailgate party at the hotel. Everyone wore their favorite team's apparel and watched the game and partied. Everyone had a great time. Local 158 was honored to have hosted this event.

L.U. 196 (govt,mt,o,t&u), ROCKFORD, IL — Merriam-Webster.com defines the word "collective" several different ways. Here are two of them: "denoting a number of persons or things considered as one group or whole"; and "involving all members of a group as distinct from its individuals."

When we talk with a group of nonunion workers, our message to them usually starts with: "If you would all band together and talk in a collective voice, you would have much more strength." — Right?

As a labor organization, in my opinion the greatest labor organization in North America, are we listening to our own words? When IBEW local unions have an issue or problem, do we work on them collectively or strike out on our own with individual goals and objectives specific to our local only?

There truly is power in numbers and if we are trying to attain the objectives of the IBEW as listed in the Constitution, they can only be accomplished in a collective, cooperative manner.

Over the past 3½ years as business manager of Local 196, I have witnessed examples of success when locals work together for a common goal, and negative results otherwise. I think we all need to start taking our own advice. I prefer success. Power in numbers.

L.U. 234 (i&mt), CASTROVILLE, CA — Our local's annual BBQ in late September was well attended and thoroughly enjoyed. It was a pleasure to honor with service awards the following members, who have achieved a half-century or more of IBEW service: 65-year member Louis Rodriguez; 60-year member Raymond Adams; 55-year members Jack Brumit, Jimmie Moore, Delbert Slaughter and Theodor Teman (see accompanying photo); and 50-year members Charles Gillis and Jimmie Vandeusen. As a relatively small California local, we additionally honored 80 members for their nearly 1,300 combined years of proud IBEW service meeting our Tri-County Electrical Contractors' needs.

Recently, an initially small but ever increasing number of members have visited local sisters and brothers, soliciting their views of our local, thereby reaffirming the obligation to "organize all workers in the entire electrical industry" — first by reaching out to our members, member-to-member (M2M) — and then by reaching out member-to-future-members (M2FM). With Ninth District backing, Bus. Mgr. Andy Hartmann has vigorously supported Organizer Chris Burditt, who in turn has inspired members to enthusiastically pursue this simple yet direct method of organizing. Overwhelmingly, this process has been well received as it moves forward.

L.U. 236 (catv,ees,govt,i,mo,rtb&t), ALBANY, NY — We are at the start of a new year, one we hope will bring everyone happiness, health and prosperity. The end of 2012 was like a roller coaster with the highs and lows that it brought upon us. One of those low points was the arrival of Hurricane Sandy and the devastation it brought to those in its path. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all who were affected by the storm as they begin the difficult task of rebuilding their communities.

The high point of this same time period came with the results of our November election. Our leaders told us that if we did not wear out our soles, while pounding the pavement to get the president re-elected, then we were not doing enough. I am proud to say that we must have worn out many, because we were rewarded with the successful re-election of President Barack Obama. So now we move forward into 2013 with the hopes of our economy improving and our employment thriving.

Lance, who has done an outstanding job of creating a good IBEW presence in our local. We are also excited to introduce our new Organizer Nate Albertson to the new job. Nate served a five-year Local 280 apprenticeship and turned out in 2009. He has the knowledge and energy to fill the big shoes that Lance will leave. L.U. 300 (govt,i,mt&u), MONTPELIER, VT — Our inside electricians and apprentices experienced a very busy summer and fall last year. They basically did the impossible, completing jobs with unbelievable expectations on time. That is what a team of IBEW workers can accomplish. Members are not experiencing the overtime hours they were previously, but the majority of the members are still working.

If the information that our contractors are receiving from their present customers holds true, our work picture will continue to be positive through the first and second quarters of 2013. Two of the major catalysts for this positive outlook are IBM Burlington and Vermont Yankee Nuclear.

Another equally important sector of work for us is solar. Solar jobs have increased membership and employment numbers continually even during Vermont`s winter months. The brothers and sisters performing this work deserve our praise and gratitude.

We are also experiencing great success with our CE/CW program. Our contractors are employing several program participants, all of whom are receiving positive reviews. All of our CWs are attending boot camp class and aggressively seeking their place within the IBEW.

I would like to remind all journeymen that apprentices are the future of the IBEW, so please train them well.

L.U. 302 (i,rts&spa), MARTINEZ, CA — On Dec. 19, 2012, our local hosted a dinner thanking all the members who helped bring our political message to the population at large.

In the final analysis, good old-fashioned legwork is still very important in political elections. Despite the incredible amounts of money spent on political campaigns, the big spenders are frequently not the big winners.

For the 2010 California race for governor, we saw executive Meg Whitman outspend then-attorney general Jerry Brown by a ratio of 6 to 1, only to lose the governor's race to Brown. Although Mitt Romney outspent President Obama for the 2012 presidential election, both from his own campaign and outside donor PACs, the results showed the winner to be the one with the best "ground game."

From local elections to statewide propositions, despite being frequently outspent, we helped educate the voters of California to reject anti-union measures and elect pro-labor candidates.

A good ground game is something organized labor has been able to count on and IBEW Local 302 has been a large contributor to this personal door-to-door effort, both in manpower and coordination.

L.U. 306 (i), AKRON, OH — As usual, Ohio proved an important element in the recent November election. The turnout from organized labor played a major role in this victory. Approximately 70 percent of union households in Ohio voted to re-elect President Obama, and as AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka told us on a recent stop in Akron, "The IBEW is always at the forefront of every political battle." Thank you to every IBEW local in Ohio and to every Local 306 member who helped throughout the campaign season.

On Dec. 1 our annual Christmas party was held at Todaro's Party Center. All had a wonderful time thanks to our hard working Social Committee.

L.U. 332 (c,ees,i&st), SAN JOSE, CA — Our Stewardship Committee is growing in size and enthusiasm. Our most recent meeting had 36 attendees. Our upcoming Steward Class was enthusiastically requested by members and is expected to grow the committee further.

During 2012, our JATC indentured 94 commercial and residential apprentices. We expect great things from each of these new trade unionists! The JATC is also graced with a new parking lot solar array canopy, constructed in record time.

Congratulations once again to the IBEW Local 332 Softball Team — the 2012 champions of the local Summer League. They are back-to-back winners having also won in 2011. Way to go, team!

The holidays always draw many members out to spread cheer through our volunteer events such as San Jose's Christmas in The Park display, and decorating the Liberty Towers retirement home.

We thank our members for participating in the recent 2012 election cycle. Our precinct walks, phone banks and job site meetings were well attended. We were successful at state, county and municipal levels on propositions, measures and candidates. We are so grateful to have an informed and involved membership.

L.U. 340 (i,rts&spa), SACRAMENTO, CA — Once again last year, Local 340 experienced the real meaning of "brotherhood" at Christmas. Annual proceeds of the IBEW/NECA Operation Christmas Basket Raffle helped many union members of all trades have a good Christmas by providing food and toys for their families. Also, Local 340's office staff and members who could donated toys, food items and gift cards to our own Local 340 families who really needed a "hand up" this year due to hard times.

Quite a few of our local members had to travel out of our jurisdiction last year to find work, and I am extremely grateful to the locals that were able to get them out for work as, once again, it was a tough year for Sacramento work. However, since the elections went very well for our area in November, after months of precinct walking, phone banking, attending political events and many contributions, I think our work picture will look better in the next few years.

We did fabulously last year in electing friends-of-labor, thanks to union members who voted for our endorsed candidates and got out the vote through canvasses and phone banks. As a result, of our important races we won seven and lost one. Most important was the re-election of President Barack Obama, who won handily. Polls show union members were paramount to re-electing him.

Newly elected U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos, from the 17th Congressional District of Illinois, became just the second Democrat to represent the Rockford area in Congress. The counties of Whiteside, Stephenson, Jo Daviess and Carroll are also in her district, which is one of the districts nationwide that is most densely populated by union households. Rep. Bustos has vowed that she will be our tireless union advocate.

In Illinois General Assembly races, we did extraordinarily well also. In Winnebago County we elected friends-of-labor Steve Stadelman to the Illinois Senate and Chuck Jefferson to the Illinois House. In Whiteside County we re-elected Illinois Sen. Mike Jacobs, and to the Illinois House AFSCME member Mike Smiddy. Statewide, unprecedented union involvement led to landslide union-friendly Democratic Party victories in both the state Senate and House, securing veto-proof majorities.

We also elected a good number of endorsed candidates in Winnebago, DeKalb, Boone, Lee, Whiteside, Stephenson and Ogle Counties, with a win percentage of 70 percent!

L.U. 440 (i,rts&spa), RIVERSIDE, CA — Our great Brotherhood was founded to take care of the workers in our industry — to provide a better way of life for those workers and the families they worked to support. It is a beautiful thing to see what this great Brotherhood has grown into, and it is an unexplainable feeling to be part of it. It is especially inspiring when the members of today act with the same dedication and commitment shown by the founding members of yesteryear.

Over the year 2012, Local 440 put together various clubs to build camaraderie. We are utilizing these clubs and the events we hold as a way for our voice to be heard, not only amongst our membership but also especially within the communities our jurisdiction covers. Using the clubs has been a great alternative avenue to get our members together and informed. A highlight is that we have raised funds for our sick committee through club meetings. Also among recent activities were our fourth annual Local 440 Golf Turkey Shoot, and our second annual Veterans Day Gun Club meeting.

On behalf of IBEW Local 440, I thank all who have participated. Also, I wish to invite all members to participate in our Member to Member class to be held at our meeting hall on Feb. 11 and Feb. 12, at 5 p.m. This is another great opportunity for us to strengthen our jurisdiction and our local.

L.U. 480 (em,i&mt), JACKSON, MS — The new security pavilion pictured above highlights the completion of the three-year Dr. A.H. McCoy Federal Building modernization project in Jackson, MS, as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 signed by President Barack Obama. This project encompassed converting the Federal Building into a high performance "green building," which generally combines energy efficiency and renewable energy production.

Local contractor Prime Electric worked in conjunction with Miller Electric Company of Jacksonville, FL, employing approximately 30 journeyman wiremen and apprentices throughout most of the construction.

This two-year stimulus project provided jobs for IBEW Local 480 members and fellow trade unionists during tough economic times. A total of five union crafts from the Southeast were involved in the job throughout its duration.

L.U. 530 (i,o&rtb), SARNIA, ONTARIO, CANADA — On Nov. 16 last year, Local 530 held our 71st Annual Dinner Dance. This event was yet again another success with many members and retirees in attendance. During this evening some members received their years-of-service pins. Receiving 60 year pins were: Maurice Auger, Roger Cataford, Vince Gerber, Eric Jensen and Ross Smith.

On Dec. 2 we held our Children's Christmas Party. There was skating for all the children and their parents, followed by Santa paying a visit with gifts for all the kids.

Again last year Local 530 collected nonperishable goods to be donated to the Inn of the Good Shepherd. Thanks to all those who dropped off goods for the less fortunate.

L.U. 558 (catv,em,i,mt,o,rtb,rts, spa&u), SHEFFIELD, AL — Greetings, brothers and sisters. Hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday season. At the time of this reporting, work has been slow through the holidays. However, we anticipate the staffing up of the Toyota Motor Manufacturing expansion in Huntsville, AL, and the spring outage at TVA Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant. Both of these projects should be in full swing by the end of February or the beginning of March.

During the holidays local union members built a Christmas float and participated in several Christmas parades winning a variety of awards. Congratulations to all who dedicated their time in making this a continuing success. Other holiday events included the Local 558 Retirees Club Christmas Dinner on Dec. 13. This event is always a memorable one when retirees and their spouses get together for dinner and fellowship. Each year the Retirees Club presents a certificate to the member with the most years of service attending the dinner. This year the certificate was presented to Bro. William B. "Mickey" McGuire for 66 years of service. Congratulations, Bro. McGuire!

L.U. 570 (i,mo,spa&u), TUCSON, AZ — Local 570 had an eventful year putting people out to work on: the Waste Water Treatment Plant, 5-megawatt and 25-megawatt solar jobs, the University of Arizona Stadium, a street car project, Raytheon and more local jobs.

In 2012 we went over 1,000 people trained through Local 570 in the Code of Excellence.

Community service involvement included: staffing an Aid Station for the Tour of the Tucson Mountains bike race in early 2012, assisting with the Labor Day picnic, and for the 30th year in a row manning a Start Station for the El Tour de Tucson bike race in November. The local participated with the Pima Area Labor Federation in building food boxes at the Fire Fighters Hall and donating to members for Thanksgiving and Christmas. We also put up the Christmas lights in downtown Tucson. Thanks to all our members for making 2012 a good year.

L.U. 640 (em,govt,i,mo,mt,rts,spa&u), PHOENIX, AZ — Local 640 took part in the 26th annual City of Phoenix Electric Light Parade. Hundreds of thousands of spectators lined Central Avenue in Phoenix cheering on both Local 640 (inside wiremen) and Local 387 (utility) with their respective entries. The annual Membership Holiday Party was held earlier that same day. Thanks to all the volunteers who help make this possible.

The annual charity golf outing was again a huge success. Local 640 works year-round to raise money through that tournament, and other venues, in order to provide a holiday party for the residents, staff and families of Hacienda Healthcare, a long-term care facility for Arizona's most severely disabled children and adults. Special thanks to Michael Bragone, Lonni Greene and Al Gross, who plays Santa.

Hospitals, casinos, Intel, and utility-scale solar power projects look to keep our construction economy strong for 2013 and beyond.

The 2012 election cycle efforts of Local 640, the Arizona Building Trades, and the Arizona AFL-CIO had mixed results. We are sending a majority of our congressional delegation to Washington, D.C., as labor endorsed; five of nine Arizona candidates elected to the U.S. Congress were endorsed by labor. However, we were unsuccessful in several key local races. Thanks to all the volunteers for their efforts!

L.U. 654 (i), CHESTER, PA — Not only did we all win big in the Presidential Election of 2012, but we also won big in local elections as well with the vast majority of candidates endorsed by Local 654 and the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO winning their respective campaigns.

Start-up work has been completed at the idled Conoco Refinery, which has reopened as Monroe Energy, a subsidiary of Delta Airlines, Inc. Work is set to begin in the spring of 2013 at the idled Sunoco Refinery. Sunoco Logistics will build a new $400-million unit to process and ship natural gas from the Marcellus Shale to other markets.

On a sadder note, we regret to announce the death of our former business manager, James R. Conroy. Bro. Conroy served as assistant business manager and president from 1986 to 1997 and as business manager from 1997 to 2003, before retiring in 2004. He will be missed dearly.

Unfortunately, Proposal 2 (a ballot referendum on collective bargaining to protect all Michigan families) did not pass in November 2012.

Soon afterward in December so-called "right-to-work" legislation was rushed through the lame-duck state legislature and quickly signed by Gov. Rick Snyder. Dec. 8 was the Annual Southern Illinois Labor Council Food Drive for our local community food pantries. Local 702 members are always in attendance to distribute the food, and we thank them.

We have 127 on the journeyman wireman Book I and 157 on Book II.

We are proud of all the IBEW members who responded to the East Coast's needs for storm recovery assistance after Hurricane Sandy. They are to be congratulated on a job well done.

Journeymen Elmer Sisler, Charlie Sisler and Mike Sisler represent three generations of the Sisler family, and they have a combined total of 110 years of IBEW Local 704 membership among them. Elmer is currently the oldest member of our local; he was initiated in 1942 and retired in 1983. Congratulations, Elmer!

Another noteworthy recognition: Bro. Terry DeMaio was named Volunteer of the Year by Albrecht Acres. This organization is a camp dedicated to the handicapped citizens of our community. Terry's efforts help provide the camp participants a safe and enjoyable environment. Thank you, Terry!

The American worker gets a reprieve and maybe another chance at restoring the prominent middle class we once enjoyed. But, brothers and sisters, remember that although we dodged a sure fire anti-union administration, we must be diligent in fighting for working families and the survival of the labor movement. We cannot count on the government alone to secure the right of unions to exist. Our members and all of the working class are counting on the IBEW and other labor organizations to lead by example.

On a nonpolitical note, Local 756 pulled off another stellar Kids Christmas Party in December. Mr. and Mrs. Santa Clause made a special appearance at the union hall on a Saturday morning with good cheer and presents for the children and grandchildren of our members. Everyone enjoyed food, drinks, music, cookie decorating, and good old-fashioned Christmas spirit. A great reminder of what's really important in life. Thanks again for all the preparation that Office Manager Candice Hampton provided to help make this another successful celebration.

L.U. 910 (ees,i&t), WATERTOWN, NY — At the December 2012 meetings in both Watertown and Plattsburgh, service pins were presented to Local 910 members. Eligible members with 10 or more years of service received IBEW service pins and were recognized for their commitment to the IBEW and our industry. Those unable to attend in person receive their pin by mail. In 2012 we gave out service pins to 92 Local 910 members.

Retired Local 910 member Horace Smith received his 70-year service pin after participating in the 2012 Solidarity Day Parade on Labor Day in Massena, NY. Horace is also a World War II veteran, who served in the Army Air Corps stationed in England. Congratulations, Horace, on your longtime IBEW service and thank you for your service to the United States of America.

Our membership and organized labor in general should be proud of their efforts in the November 2012 elections. Hopefully now that the elections are behind us, the economy will begin to grow at a faster pace and result in more construction projects that will return more IBEW members to work.

Larry Miller, a retired lineman from Columbus Northwest, has taken it upon himself to help start a Retirees Club for our local and the first meeting was held in late November 2012. Our hope is to reach out to our brothers and sisters we may have lost touch with, and to reconnect with friends we've not seen in a while. Let's not forget those who came before us and paved the way for our local to be what it is today.

RETIREES CLUB OF L.U. 1, ST. LOUIS, MO — Retirees of Local 1 look forward to the year ahead with hopes of an improved economy and more jobs for our members. In recent months, we held a club meeting on Nov. 21, and the Ladies Auxiliary Luncheon was Dec. 5.

As a highlight of the regular November meeting, Bus. Mgr. Frank Jacobs spoke briefly, updating retirees on their health insurance coverage, and government overseas work possibilities. A short question-and-answer period followed.

The December luncheon sponsored by the Ladies Auxiliary of Local 1 was a great success. It was well attended and everyone had a good time. The food was outstanding and the hall was decorated for the Christmas season. Auxiliary Pres. Shirley Missey presented a check for $3,000 to Bus. Mgr. Jacobs for the Local 1 Welfare Fund (see accompanying photo). The ladies worked hard raising these funds for the needy members of our local Brotherhood.

RETIREES CLUB OF L.U. 3, NEW YORK, NY, NASSAU CHAPTER — We here on Long Island have come through one of the worst storms in history and one I can say never experienced in my 80 years. The devastation of Hurricane Sandy in our area and surrounding areas — in Far Rockaway, Long Beach, Island Park, Freeport — has to be seen to grasp the storm's true impact, which has left those hit the hardest facing a long road back to normal.

It was nice to see helping line trucks from our neighbor in Canada, and the surrounding states, giving Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) the help needed. Restoration following the havoc that destroyed power to thousands of homes has been a monumental task, but through long hours and the hard work of dedicated electrical workers, progress was underway and ongoing at this writing.

This storm has changed the thinking about where to put the electrical power (service) in many buildings in New York City. Some are moving it to higher floors, which will be a tremendous undertaking, but nothing the IBEW can't handle. … We will survive.

RETIREES CLUB OF L.U. 3, NEW YORK, NY, SOUTHWEST FLORIDA GULF COAST CHAPTER — On December 6, 2012, the place to be was the SWFL Gulf Coast Chapter Fourth Annual Christmas Party at Braxton's Restaurant at the Raptor Bay Golf Club in the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point, Bonita Springs, FL. The party was well attended by chapter members, spouses and friends with balmy weather outside and good food and spirits inside. It made for a great night to kick off the holidays. For the party, the chapter engaged a locally acclaimed DJ who provided holiday tunes, sing-a-longs and oldies that took us back to our youth. Even Mrs. Santa Claus made a surprise appearance with gifts for the ladies. Everyone had a great time.

SWFL Chapter meetings are well attended in an atmosphere of camaraderie and brotherhood. Monthly meetings include the Pension Director's Report, which contains the current state of Local 3, updates on political developments locally and in Florida, and spirited questions and answers about the union movement.

More Chapter News: A picnic and golf outing are planned for the spring.

RETIREES CLUB OF L.U. 3, NEW YORK, NY, SUFFOLK CHAPTER — Due to the generosity of our members, we donated over 250 pounds of food and an $80 donation to Long Island Cares. This will help to stock the food pantries.

The Holiday Party was once again a great success. There was plenty to eat and drink, music, dancing and raffles. The best part was that there was a great turnout to share laughs and holiday wishes. We thank Marie and Fred Faas for all their hard work organizing and planning the party.

Our end of the year BBQ was a great success; thanks to Ed Scalice and his committee of chefs for a great job.

RETIREES CLUB OF L.U. 3, NEW YORK, NY, WESTCHESTER / PUTNAM CHAPTER — This month's article is especially difficult to write, knowing the hardship and devastation Hurricane Sandy has wrought. The aftermath of such a storm makes everything else seem relatively unimportant for a time.

Our Christmas/Hanukkah luncheon was held at the Traveler's Rest, in Ossining, NY, with 128 members in attendance.

Three Gold Members, 80 years of age, received certificates honoring their service and dedication. Honorees were Vincent Panzarino, Charles Sladek and John Wasilko.

On Sept. 18, an enjoyable trip was made to the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum and the Space Shuttle Enterprise, followed by a luncheon at Ciao's Restaurant.

On Oct. 13, our annual fall golf outing was held. All prize money was generously donated to the Fisher House foundation, at our November meeting. The generosity continued, when our 50/50 prize was also donated.

A donation of $500 to the IBEW Disaster Fund to aid victims of Hurricane Sandy was unanimously approved — an example of our IBEW brothers and sisters helping those in need.

On Dec. 3, a group of 48 members and guests enjoyed a show at the Westchester Dinner Theater.

RETIREES CLUB OF L.U. 58, DETROIT, MI — Greetings to all. In 2012 some of our dearest brothers and sisters "left us for that big one in the sky." They are all tremendously missed.

John Ahern is in his ninth year as Retirees Club president, surpassed in time served only by Treas. Ray Owen with 22 years.

The 2012 Boston trip was a huge success. Next up is a trip to Savannah, GA. Space is limited so please get your security deposits in early.

Our annual Christmas party put on by the Retirees, Wives and Widows Association was held Dec. 5 at the local union hall. It was a wonderful celebration enjoyed by all. This event is only surpassed by our April Pin Party.

With the November 2012 elections behind us, it's most jubilant that we still have a Democrat in the White House and a majority in the Senate. Don't ever forget your roots and who brought betterment to your table — your labor union. If it weren't for hard-working members who preceded us, what would we have today? Thank God for their foresight and that of IBEW officers to bargain on behalf of active and retired members.

For 50-plus years I have been affiliated with our organization. And I know we will survive despite those who wish to destroy us by changing laws or advocating substandard wages and benefits. May God bless the IBEW and all who support the cause of working families.

RETIREES CLUB OF L.U. 60, SAN ANTONIO, TX — At Christmas, the greatest gift is the gift of our freedom. This gift was given to us by many who have given so much. It was an honor for the retirees of Local 60 to collect personal items for the Wounded Warriors project during the recent holiday season. Transporting the gifts to Fort Sam Houston were Pres. Gene Chamberlain with wife Marilyn, and Bro. Coy Rogers with wife Sandy.

The club's Christmas meeting/luncheon did not disappoint any of the 50 attendees. The festive dishes brought by members were delicious. The games, fun and entertainment were enjoyed by all as usual.

RETIREES CLUB OF L.U. 113, COLORADO SPRINGS, CO — Early summer of last year brought the election of club officers. Our club was chartered Sept. 22, 1978.

Much of our attention during the hot, dry summer of 2012 was consumed by the Waldo Canyon fire, as it devastated parts of our Pike National Forest and city. Thankfully, none of our members lost their homes. Sadly, nearly 350 of our neighbors did.

Our heartfelt appreciation goes out to some 1,500 dedicated firefighters, countless police officers, sheriff's deputies, utility workers and other first responders, along with the many charitable organizations and their volunteer crews. So many worked countless hours during the weeks of the fire protecting our lives and property, restoring services, providing meals and temporary housing.

We enjoyed an unexpected Christmas "bonus" when the Eighth District Electrical Benefit Fund waived the December premium for supplemental health benefits.

Our Retirees Club meets the second Friday of each month, 11:30 a.m., at the Country Buffett located at the Citadel Crossings Shopping Center on the northeast corner of Platte Avenue and Academy Boulevard.

Please come join us for lunch and a fun time renewing old friendships, followed by a short business meeting.

RETIREES CLUB OF L.U. 130, NEW ORLEANS, LA — Last Sept. 27 our annual meeting in the Alexander room was a big success. As usual, there was plenty of food and drinks and everyone had a wonderful time.

In September, October, November and December we enjoyed our monthly Casino trip. There were no big winners, but it was fun for everyone.

The Christmas party was Dec. 6 in the Alexander room from 4-7 p.m. We had a buffet style dinner; the DJ played Christmas music and there was plenty of dancing.

Our retired members of the club are presented an IBEW watch for 60 or more years of service. Recent recipients are: 60-year members Joseph Baragona, Michael Emig (former business manager), Richard Schrieffer and Alden Talbot; 65-year members Edward Hamberger, Philip Saladino and John Tauzy; 70-year member John Mangiaracina; and 75-year member Fernand Fenasci Jr. Congratulations to all.

All Local 130 retired members are eligible to join the Retirees Club. Dues are $35 per year, paid by check or money order. The dues collected cover three meetings and the Christmas party.

RETIREES CLUB OF L.U. 134, CHICAGO, IL — At our Retirees Club Christmas party, we presented a plaque to honor the first president of our Retirees Club, Irv Blaszynski. He has been a driving force for our club for 24 years and is widely admired for all he has accomplished for our club. We thank you, Irv! A delicious corned beef dinner and wonderful desert were served and gift certificates were raffled off at the party.

Local 134 created a Helping Hand Fund and has raised money for our union brothers and sisters who are unemployed because of tough economic times. Many families already have received contributions from the fund. We are seeking additional donations to help those in need. Contributions are appreciated and are tax deductible. Local 134 working members and retirees have not forgotten our brothers and sisters. RETIREES CLUB OF L.U. 177, JACKSONVILLE, FL — Our Retirees Club is very active and has increased its membership over the past year. We meet on the third Friday of every month (July and August excluded). We have great fellowship with the retired members, their wives and widows. After a short business meeting, we have a covered dish luncheon. Meat and beverages are supplied by the union (thank you to the local), and great side dishes by the ladies! Then we play bingo, a real favorite of many.

In February 2012, our club presented a $500 check to the Second Harvest Food Bank. Their trademark is "We Nourish Hope" and that they do. The mission of Second Harvest North Florida is to distribute food and grocery products to hungry people and to educate the public about the causes of and possible solutions to problems of domestic hunger.

RETIREES CLUB OF L.U. 212, CINCINNATI, OH — I doubt that whoever coined the phrase "the golden years" was actually living them. Hallmark, I suppose. When life contains more past than future, affordable health care becomes extremely important. Retirees spend much money and time visiting doctors, pharmacies and funeral homes. Some retirees do enjoy good health; they golf, fish and travel yet many of our members and/or spouses are facing chronic ailments, serious surgeries and life-changing diseases. Please remember these families in your prayers.

It is with much sorrow that I report the November 2012 death of Bro. Norbert Kenkel, who was a Retirees Club member and 61-year IBEW member. With Catherine and her family, we mourn for Norb and all departed Local 212 members.

Well, the smoke has cleared and the November elections are history. However, we must remain politically active protecting hard-fought gains from the past or we will lose them. Where we choose to spend our money is a form of freedom of speech. Support businesses that support us by using our partner contractors. Avoid businesses that try to use their wealth to buy our democracy. Stay in contact with your elected officials. Become an activist for your family's future.

RETIREES CLUB OF L.U. 236, ALBANY, NY — On Oct. 16 last year the Local 236 retirees held their annual luncheon at Treviso in the Italian American Center in Albany, NY. This was the 38th year for our luncheon. The event was attended by 60 retired members and the widows of some of our retirees no longer with us. The food was great and the day spent together reminiscing was even better, with all in attendance enjoying the get-together. Retirees Club Pres. Phil Clemens introduced our new officers: Vice Pres. Bob Jenne and Treas. Lou Lourania. We thank our photographer, Ken Hinckley, for the work he did that day, and we thank Local 236 Bus. Mgr. Don Rahm for all his help.

RETIREES CLUB OF L.U. 257, JEFFERSON CITY, MO — The Retirees Club met Dec. 11, 2012, for our annual Christmas luncheon, which was hosted by Local 257. We thank the local again for their hospitality. The luncheon was enjoyed by a record crowd. Again at Christmas our club collected $700 to be donated to a worthy cause. For 2012, the club selected St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Our club had a successful and busy year in 2012. Club members participated in several volunteer projects. These included: volunteering to help judge and grade the competition at the Skills USA Competition at Linn State Technical College (which we have done the last few years); getting floats ready for parades; and the latest, volunteering to help build a home for wounded Marine Corps veteran Tyler Steven Huffman (project "Operation Tyler").

We have also had a few fun side trips along the way. Additionally, last year we added a few new members and we welcome them.

On a somber note, in November we lost a member and friend, Marvin Pauley. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

We wish everyone good health and prosperity in the New Year ahead and look forward to seeing everyone in 2013.

RETIREES CLUB OF L.U. 291, BOISE, ID — The December Christmas Potluck and Gift Exchange was held at the Don Ivory Training Center in Garden City. We had over 40 in attendance, including representatives from the union hall and Eighth District Int. Rep. Benjamin "Benny" Antunes, who shared some words of wisdom. Club Pres. Joe Sirani preceded the meal with a prayer giving thanks for the sacrifice of our military men and women, and ended with the sharing of brotherhood and good wishes for the coming year. We enjoyed turkey, pulled pork, all the Christmas trimmings and some great salads and desserts. Door prize giveaways followed lunch. Denise Ivory won a snowman cookie jar and Dave Wolff won a knife donated by the union hall.

A couple of members are fighting serious illnesses and they need our prayers. As we look forward to the new year ahead, let us pray that our country's leaders keep us moving forward. Defend and project the rights for us to be union members, always!

RETIREES CLUB OF L.U. 353, TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA — Our Retirees Club members enjoyed the most successful year of planned programs, including our 27th Annual Christmas Dinner/Dance, attended by over 600 retired members and guests. Attendees included Int. Vice Pres. Phillip J. Flemming, Local 353 Bus. Mgr./Fin. Sec. Steve Martin, Local 353 Pres. Rob White and Local 353 Executive Board officers. We gave recognition to four of our club founding members: Bob Barker, age 98; George Campbell, 86; John Reynolds, 91; and Jim Shaw, 91. We also had retiree guests from Locals 105, 120, 303, 586 and 804.

Our successes were due to the continued support of many: the working members and the "Sports, Entertainment & Retirees Trust Fund," our Retirees Club executive board, Bus. Mgr. Steve Martin and the Local 353 executive board officers and staff, the ladies in the office, the ladies and gentlemen who help serve at our monthly luncheons, and all the IBEW locals that honor us by inviting our club to their functions or participating in ours.

Our monthly meetings, attended by 100-120 retirees, are held the first Tuesday of each month. We urge all Retirees Clubs to continue to "raise the bar" as all retirees and their spouses have earned it and deserve it.

RETIREES CLUB OF L.U. 530, SARNIA, ONTARIO, CANADA — As I write this article we are nearing the end of the year 2012. Our November meeting was attended by 30 retirees and their spouses. A few of our members travel south for the cold months. Those of us who stay at home look forward to the activities that break up the long winter.

Our club has an opportunity, twice a year, to spend time with the active members of Local 530. In August, we are invited to participate in their annual golf tournament and then in November, we join them for their Christmas Dinner and Dance. Those able to attend enjoy plenty of fellowship with the younger generations. A point of interest: Our Local 530 has 10 families comprising three generations of tradesmen, and two families with two generations of journeyman electricians.

Sherry Harpell and Sue Tracey manage the daily requirements of our local office. They are a source of knowledge and resource to all our working members. Additionally, they take care of our needs as well. They provide for us whatever we require, with a cheerful smile and a gracious spirit. We are fortunate to have the two of them always "there" for us. Thank you, Sherry. Thank you, Sue.

RETIREES CLUB OF L.U. 683, COLUMBUS, OH — The Retirees and Widows Club of Local 683 meets the third Tuesday of each month with a potluck luncheon in our union hall.

In December we have a catered luncheon for our members to celebrate the Christmas season together. All our union officers and executive board members and their spouses are invited for this festive occasion. We enjoy the large attendance and togetherness.

Election of club officers is held every two years in January. March is our annual pizza party. In lieu of a meeting at the hall, we hold our June picnic and September wiener roast at a park in Grove City, OH. Our members enjoy the variation of those get-togethers while appreciating nature.

Twice a year the club has a nice breakfast at the union hall, which usually improves our attendance.

We have been deeply saddened the last two years by the loss of six club members.

Brotherhood and friendship are our main goals, which are stressed for all members of locals across the United States and Canada.
