July 5, 2011

A radio ad sponsored by the IBEW is telling Comcast Corp.,: if you support Barack Obama for president, you need to heed his call to let workers freely organize.

Obama was in Philadelphia last Thursday for a fundraiser hosted by Comcast Executive Vice President David Cohen.

But as the ad says:

President Obama feels strongly that companies shouldn’t stop workers from organizing unions … Unfortunately, one of the companies blocking unionization at every turn is Comcast.

Comcast is known as the “Walmart of Telecommunications” for the extreme lengths it will go to prevent and undermine employees’ right to join a union and collectively bargain.

The company was even the subject of a 2004 American Rights at Work report because of its repeated violations of labor law.

As reported in the July issue of the Electrical Worker:

[Comcast] managers have resorted to a host of union-busting maneuvers … from dividing the work force by buying off employees through bonuses and promotions to intimidating union supporters through unfair disciplinary actions and illegal terminations.

The ad – which ran all day in the Philadelphia market – tells the company:

We agree with the choice for President. It’s time Comcast agreed with the president that unions are good for our country’s workers.
