Union Plus Awards IBEW Scholarships
July 26, 2011 The 2011 Union Plus Scholarship Program awarded $7,750 in scholarships to nine students with connections to the IBEW.
Union Plus Scholarship are granted to students based on academic ability, social awareness, financial need and appreciation of the labor movement.
Dylan Webb, whose mother Bernice Webb is a member of Portland, Ore., Local 48, received a $1,000 scholarship and plans to pursue a career in robotic engineering.
Devon Jedamski received a $ 500 award. He hopes to one day lead a research team in the design of sustainable energy systems after earning a degree in aeronautical engineering. His father James Jedamski is a member of Rochester, N.Y., Local 86.
Anne Ballard was awarded a $1,000 scholarship. Anne is returning to school after nearly 30 years. Her husband Robert Ballard is a member of Chicago, Local 134.
Lev Litichevskiy, winner of a $1,000 scholarship, wishes to pursue a career as a biomedical engineer. His father, Bogdan Litichevskiy, is a member of Jersey City, N.J., Local 164
Tyler Dean, whose mother Diane Dean is a member of Sioux Falls, S.D., Local 426, was awarded a $750 scholarship. Tyler plans to have a career in telecommunications and expects to work for a union company.
Yunqi (Mimi) Liu believes deeply in civic engagement and plans to earn a degree in international relations and peace and conflict studies. Her mother Lisa Chen is a member of Toronto, Ontario, Local 636.
Angelique McGuire, a two-time Union Plus Scholarship winner, received a $1,000 scholarship this year. She has completed three years of college and is pursuing a nursing degree. Angelique’s father is a member of Columbus, Ohio, Local 683.
Cody Miller, whose father Kris Lee Miller is a member of Grand Junction, Colo., Local 969, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship in the hopes of becoming an art director for an advertising agency.
Turner Wright, a member of Houston, Texas, Local 716, was awarded a $500 scholarship. A union member who aspires to be a leader, Turner is pursuing a degree in communications to become a more effective advocate for working families.
