Iowa IBEW Retirees Aid Flood Victims
After working for more than four decades in the industry, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Local 405 journeyman wireman Wayne Engle was enjoying his well-deserved retirement.
But after friends and neighbors suffered significant flood damage to their homes last June, Engle dusted off his tools, called up some fellow retirees and set into action to help his community.
Their efforts have been much appreciated. “The homeowners are just so gracious and so thoughtful,” Engle told the Cedar Rapids Gazette. “Some days, some weeks, we may be the only good news they have."
Working jointly with volunteers from the United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 125, the crew has rewired or plumbed more than 70 houses.
“Wayne is very civic minded – he’s dedicated to the community and to the IBEW/NECA partnership,” said Local 405 Business Manager Bill Hanes. “We’re proud of the work he’s doing for our citizens.”
