Calif. Local Hosts Motorcycle Poker Run for Wounded VetsApril 13, 2009 In poker, laying down a royal flush guarantees you the pot. But when hosting a first-time fundraiser, it’s best to have a full house. On Saturday, March 28, scores of San Jacinto, Calif., Local 1436 members turned out to participate in a motorcycle poker run to benefit the Wounded Warriors Project – a charity that aids severely injured service members returning from Iraq. “Many in the local pulled together to coordinate this event, and more members than I hoped for came out,” said Local 1436 Recording Secretary Connie Jamerino, who counted nearly 80 bikes, some with two riders. “The spirit of union strength, of getting together to ride – it was all made more positive knowing that the reason everyone came was to support those who put themselves in harm’s way for our freedom.” Beginning at the Hangar One Airport Café in suburban Hemet, bikers drew their first card in hopes of a winning hand. Riders then roared off to more stops along the winding stretch of roads that snake through the Idyllwild Mountains, drawing additional cards at stops along the way. More than a hundred miles later, the crew returned to the café to either hold ‘em or fold ‘em. Local 1436 member Jeff Gollaher pulled the winning hand – a full house. Gollaher is a senior construction inspector for the Eastern Municipal Water District in Perris.
“Everyone had smiles on their faces all day long, and it felt great to help such a good cause,” Gollaher said. Ninth District International Representative Kelly Foster came in second, and Local 1436 member Mark Thewes placed third. By day’s end, the riders raised more than $3,000 for the charity. Organizers hope to make the ride an annual gathering and are looking to double down on their successes for next year’s event. “Our goal is for twice as many riders to show up in 2010,” Jamerino said. “We want to do everything we can for these American heroes. We’re proud and humbled by their sacrifices.” For information about the charity, visit www.woundedwarriorproject.org.
