Murder of Trade Unionist In Mexico
Outrages Labor Community
April 17, 2007
Trade unionists are condemning the April 9 murder of a Mexican employee of the union that represents farm workers who legally travel to the United States. Santiago Rafael Cruz worked for the Farm Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC), which has uncovered widespread corruption among Mexican labor recruiters who hire for U.S. agribusiness. Cruz was beaten to death at the union’s office in Monterrey, Mexico.
“The AFL-CIO will vigorously defend the rights of Mexican workers to organize with FLOC, and we will not rest until justice is done in the case of Santiago Rafael Cruz,” AFL-CIO President John Sweeney said in a statement.
