IBEW Local 26, Washington, D.C. has donated $125,000 worth of equipment for a lab to train students at a new technical school in Charles County, Maryland. The investment not only benefits the union by serving as a training ground for future IBEW members, it will also have an immediate practical use by night as a training facility for Local 26 apprentices, said Local 26 Business Manager Chuck Graham. North Point High School for Science, Technology and Industry in Pomfret, Maryland opens August 15."The ability for students to learn trades on state-of-the-art equipment and partake in a customary high school curriculum gives them a distinctive and enriching high school experience," said Principal Peter Chevenini.Joining Local 26 in the venture at North Point High school are the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee and the National Electrical Contractors Association. The effort is part of a growing trend of school-to-work programs, in which schools provide technical skills and training for jobs that industries need to fill.
"The alliance demonstrates Local 26’s commitment to developing young people in our community," Graham said. "This partnership is a win-win deal for everyone involved."
