Seattle Local 89 Aims at Broadband LinemenSeptember 6, 2005 When Verizon Inc. decided to expand its broadband marketing in Seattle, Washington, IBEW Local 89 took aim at getting more contractors and linemen who install fiber lines to premises under union contract. On August 2, 2005, the local signed Kuenzi II, a subcontractor for Quanta to a Letter of Assent A under the Telecommunications/Telephone Outside labor agreement with Northwest Line Constructors Chapter, NECA. Local 89 Business Manager Ray Egelhoff says, "This has been a real boost to our work picture." The signing entitles Kuenzi's five-member work force, who had no health plan with Kuenzi II, to be placed under the IBEW's health and welfare plan. Eglehoff expects Kuenzi's payroll and those of other signatory firms to grow fast in the fiber-to-the-premises market. The local recently signed two project labor agreements with general contractor Henkel-McCoy, assisted by NECA, which could result in Local 89 picking up 200 new members. The Local already represents outside telephone linemen at Potelco, a division of Quantas; PowerCom; Utility Trench and Michels Power.
