Contractor Signs With Las Vegas Local

June 20, 2005

Las Vegas contractor All Electric can now boast that it has a shop of all-IBEW certified electrical workers.

Las Vegas Local 357 Business Manager David Jones said the contractor became a signatory to the local’s inside construction agreement this spring after 10 years as a nonunion shop.

"This will give them a chance to expand their opportunities," Jones said. "It can make them not only more profitable but get them into markets where they have not traditionally gone."

Increasing in size from a small staff of a handful of electricians, All Electric has, in the past five years, grown to employ more than 40 people and branched out into public projects as well as private contracts. A year ago, Local 357 started stripping its workers, forcing the contractor to pay higher wages for electricians to replace those it lost. Research also yielded the information that another local signatory contractor, Acme, was owned by the same parent company. In the end, the company’s growth, the fact they were already paying top dollar for much of their help and the assistance of the local National Electrical Contractors Association all helped convert the contractor.

Jones said organizers also worked with the employees, who are anxious to experience the benefits of union membership. "We’re looking forward to working with them and management," Jones said.

All Electric has more than $15 million worth of electrical work on the books this year. Talk is under way to merge All Electric with Acme, organizers said.
