Legacy Village Project

L.U. 38 (i), CLEVELAND, OH--Local 38 members employed by Hirsch Electric worked on the $140 million Legacy Village project with financing from our NEBF pension fund. By providing the construction loan for the project, we were able to guarantee 100 percent union labor on the project and recycle dollars back into the fund.

Local 38s Scroll Party was held Sept. 27 to honor all new journeymen who completed their apprenticeships in the Inside, Teledata and Residential branches. Also honored were all members with 50-, 55-, 60- and 65 years of service. The pictures are posted on our Web site: www.ibew38.org

The Family Christmas Party will be held Sunday, Dec. 14 at the Masonic Hall. Doors open at 1 p.m. and the variety show starts at 2 p.m. Bring your children down to see Santa, receive a candy bag and a gift.

Over the summer we filed with the NLRB to hold a representation election at Sanders Electric. We won the election 9 to 4, and Sanders Electric became a union contractor effective Sept. 1, 2003.

A Special Tribute

L.U. 40 (em,i&mps), HOLLYWOOD, CA--Local 40 held its first annual Old-Timers and Apprenticeship Graduation Luncheon recently to honor graduating journeymen, as well as pay tribute to the significant participation of longstanding members, who paved the way for the IBEW as it stands today.

Highlights of the day included a slide show presentation depicting the eight decades over which our local has proudly served the entertainment industry. The slide presentationshowed our brothers working on the set of the original Frankenstein film in the mid 1920s and worked its way through the years depicting such projects as the power stations that stand as the heartbeat of every major studio today.

Keynote speakers included IBEW Ninth District Int. Rep. Tim Dixon and Mike Skinner, director of Plant Operations, CBS.

Appreciation Awards were presented to Bros. Henry Rosales and Justin Archer for their contributions to our Brotherhood.

Service pins were awarded to members with 30 or more years of IBEW service. Particularly worthy of mention: Bro. Cornelius Dunne received a 55-year service pin and Bros. Wallace Bearden and Joseph Kelly received 60-year service awards.

'Thanks, Fergy!

L.U. 48 (c,em,i,rtb, rts&st), PORTLAND, OR--Steve Ferguson has retired from his long-time duties as Local 48 dispatcher. Fergy has been very active within our local and has taught many years at the Apprenticeship Training Center and has taught Journeyman Continuing Education classes. We hope he will take time off from fishing to continue teaching. Fergy is a graduate of the Apprenticeship Program and has served extensively including a tenure as chief electrical inspector. Thank you for a job well done, Fergy!

Work remains slow. Oregon and Washington remain among the states with the highest unemployment percentages in the nation, continuing a two-year trend. As the economy struggles to restart, the Books remain ready to go back to work when the calls come in. In the next election, remember who are friends are and when work was plentiful.

The license cycle in Oregon restarted Oct. 1, 2003. Remember to check your license; stay current on continuing education and be ahead of the game for the next cycle. Salem has been very slow because of last minute renewals.

Mixed Work Picture

Local 58 Apprentice Dir. Mike Hogan, who is retiring,
receives best wishes from his office staff: from left,

L.U. 58 (em,i,rtb&spa), DETROIT, MI--The work situation here must be described as one of promise. School construction work is winding down and local politics have delayed expected projects, but the long-term outlook is for the Cadillac job to start, work at the casinos and renovation at Hazel Park Raceway. Short term, we have the auto show in October and other customary jobs, but far too few shutdowns around January and February. We have 970 signed on Book 1.

Local 58 greatly appreciates the longtime service of Mike Hogan, who is retiring as director of our Apprentice School. In Mikes 43 years in our local, he has served on the Scholarship Committee, Negotiation Committee, Entertainment Committee, Annuity Committee, the 1973 Baseball Committee and Detroit Joint Apprentice Committee. He was elected delegate five times, vice president, president and was a business agent and then appointed by Gov. Blanchard to the Executive Review Board of MI Employment Security Commission.

In 1989 Mike found his niche as apprenticeship director. "Mike was always able to gain the respect of both sides of the apprentice committee," said Gary Polulak, the schools new director. "Mike has been my mentor for a long time and I will strive to continue the tone be began in making education more meaningful."

The state is set to adopt the 2002 NEC in December. All members will have one year to complete the update code classes. Watch for the listing of classes.

Habitat for Humanity

Local 64 residential journeyman and JATC apprentices
pitch in for a Habitat for Humanity project.

L.U. 64 (i&rtb), YOUNGSTOWN, OH--On Aug. 9, 2003, members of the Mahoning-Trumbull JATC Residential Apprenticeship Program along with Inside and Residential journeymen and instructors completed our fifth "Habitat for Humanity" home in the greater Youngstown area. Many thanks to all the volunteers who donated their time, tools and equipment in support of this worthy cause.

Habitat for Humanity builds homes for low income families, who in turn give their time and help on their home, plus future Habitat homes. Many other union trades are also involved with the program.
