December 2002 IBEW Journal

First Place Champs

Local 6, San Francisco, CA, LMCC members at City
Hall, with St. Anthonys Food Pantry Reps. Alicia
Martinez and Father Floyd.

L.U. 6 (c,i,o,st&u), SAN FRANCISCO, CAThe work picture in Local 6 continues to be slow, and at this writing, we have many journeymen and apprentices out of work. We are hopeful that 2003 will bring back the prosperity experienced in the past few years. Thanks to the traveling brothers and sisters who helped out during the boom and recognized the need to keep our local members working afterward. You will always be welcomed back to The City.

We are pleased to announce that the Local 6 softball team took first place in the IBEW Ninth District Tournament hosted by Local 595, Dublin, CA, in August. Great job by coaches Rich Thompson, Jim Feflie and Nick Canalita for putting together our championship team. Hats off to Bro. Pat Cowgill for nailing the MVP honors.

The LMCC completed the Second Annual Charity Motorcycle Run to Lake Tahoe in September. Prior to the run, St. Anthonys Food Pantry of San Francisco gratefully accepted a donation by LMCC members Judy Fisher, Bart Dickson and John ORourke.

The officers and staff wish all a joyous holiday season.

Jeff Sweeney, P.S.

Moving On, Moving Up

Local 24, Baltimore, MD, Bus. Mgr. James B. Kauffman,
Jr., left, and JATC Dir. Fred Bachman, right, with the
recent JATC graduates.

L.U. 24 (es,i&spa), BALTIMORE, MDCongratulations to the Local 24 JATC class of 2002. It seems only yesterday that as first-year apprentices the hardest thing you had to remember was "righty-tighty, lefty-loosey." As second-year apprentices, you finally figured out there really arent any control screwdrivers or skinners at the bottom of a five-gallon bucket of wire soap. Third-year apprentices knew how to do it all, except bend a three-point saddle. Fourth-year apprentices mastered the three-point, and by the fifth-year they were ready to run work. We thank them for their dedication and hard work.

Fifty-one brothers and sisters graduated this year, 42 from the Inside Wireman Program and nine from the Telecommunications Program. Three brothers distinguished themselves by achieving high grade point averages. They are Michael Tyrone Williams, Jr. (Baltimore), Paul Carroll Sterling (Eastern Shore) and Steven Earl Henry (Telecommunications Program). Bro. Scott Nicholas Obringer was recognized for five years of perfect attendance. Congratulations to all.

Local 24 will be offering journeyman classes. Contact the JATC for more information. More importantly, please stay involved by attending the monthly membership meetings.

Happy Holidays to all!

Michael Lange, P.S.

New Training Facility
L.U. 26 (ees,em,es,govt,i&mt), WASHINGTON, DCWashington Convention Center Maintenance Unit employees ratified a new three-year agreement with Local 26. Thanks to Bros. Joe Brehon and Randolph Scott, who negotiated this contract.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony on September 5 for our new training facility in Manassas, VA, was attended by Lt. Gov. Tim Kaine and other Virginia state officials. An open house was held in October allowing members to tour this fantastic state-of-the art facility. Our hard hats off to Bro. David McCord and his assistants for their enthusiasm and hard work.

Picketing has been ongoing for the past several months. This is an important organizing tool, and we thank our members for their cooperation when called to serve picket duty. The local bylaws outline the duty of every member to serve.

Local 26 is saddened to report the following deaths: Bros. James Blakley, Thomas H. Johnson, William F. Simmons, James Absher and Daniel Korn.

Congratulations to the following members who have retired since our last article: Albert A. Zumstein, Barry Sisson, Herman R. Hartman, Robert M. Schaefer, Jr., David E. Leesnitzer, Carroll W. Wine, Jr. and Winfred A. Marion.

Best wishes for a wonderful holiday season!

Howard L. Ritchie, Jr., B.M.
