October/November 2001 IBEW Journal
Boxer presented charts on job creation,
the federal budget and President Bushs tax reduction to emphasize
the economic message. People with incomes of more than $1.2
million a year pay only 26 percent of federal taxes but get
44 percent of Bushs tax cut over the next 10 years. "Thats
enough to pay for a prescription drug plan under Medicare,"
Boxer said.
A growing product of increased union political action is
the election of union members to public office. Five IBEW
officeholders told their personal stories with a common theme
of outstanding labor support in both money and volunteers.
They are state legislature members Dan Gardner of Local 48,
Portland, Oregon; Tim Green of Local 1, St. Louis, Missouri,
and Michael Mulrooney of Local 313, Wilmington, Delaware,
and county legislators Jim Corbett, Local 43, Syracuse, New
York, and Bill Lindsay, Local 25, Long Island, New York.
Hill and OConnor opened the conference with a surprise presentation
to Local 269, Trenton, New Jersey, Business Manager Charles
L. "Chico" Marciante for the locals astounding
IBEW PAC contribution of $489 per member.
