Sixth District International Vice President Lawrence Curley addresses the regional progress meeting in Milwaukee.

August 6, 2001

Labor advances took center stage at the IBEW Sixth District Progress Meeting May 16-18 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where Sixth District International Vice President Lawrence Curley urged the members to continue moving forward.

Milwaukee, already a union-friendly town, last October passed a labor peace ordinance, which prohibits employers from using anti-union tactics against workers seeking a voice on the job. The delegates celebrated the organizing of a group of nursing home workers as the first since the ordinance became law. Milwaukee's strong labor history, highlighted in a video produced for the conference, was well received by the delegates.

David Newby, the president of the Wisconsin state AFL-CIO, congratulated the group for its role in building Miller Park, the Milwaukee Brewers' new baseball stadium. The park, which opened this year, was 100 percent union built.

The group also heard from IBEW Local 158 member Lee Meyerhofer, Green Bay, Wisconsin, who represents that area in the state Legislature. He stressed the importance off political involvement by union workers.

Also of interest to the delegates was a talk by a clinical specialist on the dangers of cardiac arrest. Following her advice, at least one local, 2150, Milwaukee, will be installing portable defibrillators in the union office. Only a defibrillator-not cardiopulmonary resuscitation-can shock the heart back to normal rhythm following cardiac arrest. Because of the dangerous nature of the utility business, many companies who employ IBEW members already supply the portable life-saving devices.

COPE Awards

Members of Local 557, Saginaw, Michigan, received recognition for the outstanding COPE contribution with a per-member average of $251. For outstanding total contributions, Local 58, Detroit, Michigan, won the plaque for contributing a total of $202,700.
